This is a rather interesting situation, because it's retcon-ish. F/SN explains her backstory and implies that it was the events that led to the battle of Camlann and its result that determined her choice. The reasoning is good on its own but not explicit "on-screen". Urobuchi in his love for showing characters hit rock bottom and wish to do something with Saber changed that. Does it make F/Z Saber a slightly different character? Is it good enough to believe that most of the country turning against her and then dying by her hand wasn't enough for her to blame herself while the events of the Fourth war that we do get to see was? In the end you're right, people's votes most likely won't be influenced much by this. |

She and Shoukei co-star with Youko in the series' third (and many would say best) arc, which runs episodes 23-40. (Suzu does appear briefly in the second arc, about Taiki, though; she's the girl who approached Taiki on Mt. Ho and desperately begged to be sent back to her world.) Their stories are initially widely-disparate but gradually converge; IIRC 9-10 episodes pass before any of them cross paths. Main point here is that you really need to watch this arc early on in the tournament if you've seen at least part of the series so far. And Tris8: Yeah, I'd probably give Shoukei the edge in a head-to-head between her and Suzu, and for the reasons you stated, but she's still the third of the three major ones from that series. Sugimoto is a decent choice, but she's more a reflection of/sounding board for Youko. |

That makes sense then, since I suspect I've only seen up to episode 22, as that looks like it would be the natural stopping point between Collection 1 and Collection 2 (a quick Google search to corroborate this sadly did not work). So that means it will be the first material I watch, when I finally get to that series again.

Afraid I must disagree with listing the entries as being from franchises/ multiple titles considering the particular titles in which both characters had their improvements I made for their entries. As others mentioned, Saber pretty much hits rock bottom by the end of Fate/ Zero thus there's no real improvement to her character and Tomoya in Clannad's pretty much changed significantly by After Story where only spoiler[the deaths of Nagisa and their child] shook things up for the character. I wouldn't even it call it a personal improvement for Tomoya's character when a particular plot device makes things happy again following that particular event. |

I think it is fine, at least in the case of Saber (I haven't seen AS). Yes, FSN!Saber's character development can stand on its own, and yes, Saber is not a good pick for this if you restrict the selection to FZ, but both stories make Saber's overall character development (the conflict of her pride against Kiritsugu's world view, her despair at the end of FZ, her learning from those events and eventually coming to terms with things at the end of FSN) much more complete; the fact that Saber hits rock bottom by the end of FZ makes what happens in the rest of the story all the more meaningful. This is about what characters, over the course of the material they are in, are "most improved," not about what individual anime(/arc/episode/etc.) has the particular moment in which a character becomes improved enough to warrant a nomination. The only technicality I'd say is worth getting hung up on is the fact that Saber from FZ and FSN isn't the only personality in the franchise with that name, but since that's not something the anime-only audience would know about, it shouldn't be an issue. |

Key, the link for Yuuko Kanoe of Dusk Maiden of Amnesia is broken. It redirects me to my nominations for Haruyuki Arita of Accel World and Akemi Homura of PMMM so I assume that the link there is meant for Homura in the cut list.
Voting for: Yuuko Kanoe, Dusk Maiden of Amnesia Chihiro, Spirited Away Haruko, Air (TV) The unnamed protagonist aka "watashi" / "I", The Tatami Galaxy |

I found today's nomination a bit of a challenge to avoid making it too spoilerific but I think I've found a reasonable balance.
Nominating Lain Iwakura, Serial Experiments Lain Who the character is: Lain is a schoolgirl who experiences many inexplicable things, not the least of which is that she seems to have a radically different alter ego on the Wired (the in-universe equivalent of the Internet). Eventually she and the viewer come to realise that she is something very different from what both she and we first thought. How the character improves: Initially Lain is passive: estranged from her family and peers, and confused by the weird things she witnesses and experiences. She is entirely pre-occupied with her own, strange situation. It’s almost as if she has awoken from a very long sleep and can make neither head nor tail of the world. As Lain begins to get an understanding of what she is and the enormous power she wields, her confidence and arrogance grow, making her both more and less appealing, depending on which personality is at play. Eventually she figures out that she holds the key to the welfare of the entire world and sacrifices herself to foil the plans of the person who made her what she is. Among the many themes in Serial Experiments Lain, one is the growth of Lain's self-awareness and how that leads her to make such a profound decision at the end. Picture |

Nominating
Talho Yuki, Eureka 7 Who the character is: Talho is a part of the Gekko team, a skilled pilot. Beforehand, she was a part of a military, where she met Holland. She is quite temperamental and at the beginning of the series is often seen having outbursts of anger, drinking too much and behaving in a silly or immature way. She is in love with Holland and she is jealous of Eureka and Renton's sister whom Holland dated before. How she improves: Talho matures throughout the series. A spoilt, loud girl transforms into a confident, young woman who becomes support for other characters. Initially, very insecure about her relationship to Holland and has difficulty dealing with the fact that he dater Renton's sister. As the series progresses, she managed to get rid of the jealousy, manages to develops confidence and becomes a strong partner for Holland, supporting him and making sure he gets past his own insecurities. She is the only character that openly confront him and express her feelings to him, which acts as a catalyst for his own change. The transformation is complete by the fact that Talho becomes spoiler[pregnant with Holland's child], and towards the end of the series, temporarily assumes the role of the Gekko captain. Image |
