This is a thread for discussing the evangelion proposal as put
forth by hideaki anno before the show was made; in it there are
numerous differences such as a different ending, several episodes
explaining the story that were left out of the final series, as well
as plans for at least twelve more angels. It can be found at
evageeks.com.
I've found this very interesting myself and am also slightly irritated
that whole episodes that would have clarified most of the story
were heavily altered. Also, I think the original plan for the ending,
what with the twelve angel attack, would have been really cool
to see. What do you guys think?

I looked on that site and can't find what you're talking about. Provide a direct link to this proposal or the thread gets locked.

Thanks to dtm42 for providing the link. In any future case like this, though, the direct link should always be in the initiating post.
As for the proposal differentials: So what? Projects nearly always vary between initial conception and final execution. (The original proposal for Princess Mononoke had some significant discrepancies compared to the final product, IIRC.) Frankly, I think the end result was the best one; nothing I saw in what I looked at convinced me that anything from the original proposal that was changed would have been better.
But then, I have a very high opinion of the final product, so. . .

Most of the differences between the proposal and the final product are quite - what's the word - superficial. When I look at the proposal I still see plot and characters that are distinctively and unmistakeably Neon Genesis Evangelion. So Unit 01's armour colour is changed, and Fuyutsuki is Gendo's junior, and Adam was excavated from the Dead Sea region rather than Antarctica. None of those details really matter in the slightest, and they don't change the type and style of the show.
That said, I will mention that I was intrigued at how SEELE was not in the proposal but was invented during the show's production. It isn't a big detail, but it does make me curious as to how different the plot would have been without SEELE.

Wasn't the main guy also original meant to be gay? I remember the one episode were the other guy came in and it sort of came off as the main liking him, but they had to change it because no one want to watch a show were the lead was gay or something like.
It's like Tiger & Bunny, the directer said if either Tiger or Bunny were female, they'd be in love...that would've made some progress in anime.

Well, there's not much to talk about. Had this been the final version Anno would still have extensively rewritten it two weeks before the airing. Eva turned out as it is because the stiry developed as it went on.

Sorry I couldn't reply sooner, thank you very much dtm42 for
posting the link.
The reason I find the proposal interesting is
because there were entire episodes set aside to explaining the
story, something the final product lacked and was probably worse
off for it. Also, isn't it interesting that the first ancestral race is
mentioned in the proposal?

Totally disagree. Whether originally intended that way or not, NGE ultimately comes out as highly interpretive, and I absolutely think it's better-off for it. I can't imagine that a series which more clearly-defined itself would have been as memorable or heavily-discussed over the years.

Meh. That doesn't need to be elaborated on for the series to be effective. Some things are best off staying mysterious. (Haibane Renmei would be a far less great series if that wasn't true, for instance.)

To be honest I was never into the plot anyway. It was formuaic, barely comprehensible at times and towards the end served no other purpose than to contain the characters. A lot of people find faults in that, and sure, if you were invested in the plot, it did suck. For me however playing it loose gave the story an unpredictability, it wasn't constrained by storytelling expectations as much and thus felt rawer and closer to the thoughts and emotions of people behind Eva.

Yes, I agree that the ambiguity of evangelion was one of the series
charms but I still wonder what was contained withing those
episodes and the answers they were supposed to reveal. Also,
what about those arka ruins underneath nerv?
My guess is that the tv series was supposed to conclude with a
failed attack on nerv hq by the u.n., followed by an end of evangelion
style battle with the final angels, and ending with a far less
despaire filled resolution of events inside the arka ruins as the
protagonists learn about the first ancestral race.
p.s. Thanks for reminding me that I need to watch Haibane Renmei
soon, lol.
