Just finished this series. I agree with most of the earlier sentiments about how Season Two was subpar so there's no need for me to rehash old topics. I did manage to finish in only 2 days which is a lot faster than I've done for most other fansub series I've been watching these days, but that's more related to every other 2007 TV anime sucking rather than Shana Season Two being any good. (I can understand now why there was so much controversy earlier this year about what the good animes of 2007 were. In my opinion there were none, it was a down year, therefore people's recent favorite shows are in wild disagreement with each other).
One big issue that I had with Season Two in particular which I haven't seen mentioned here yet, is that it has a different drawing style from Season One. It is not dramatically different, and is actually closer to Noizi Ito's original style than Season One was. But it's still different from Season One, the OVA, and the movie, and that bothered me somewhat. I personally strongly preferred Season One's drawing style.
Also a number of other visual differences exist. The Fuzetsu/Seal animation now features those black lines forming the dome. This change started in the movie, not Season Two. Doesn't bother me too much personally but I can see how it could bother some people a lot.
Wilhelmina's mask looks very different. I did not bother to pause and stare to exactly figure out what is different but it seems pretty different. It bothers me a lot, it goes hand-in-hand with the overall change in the facial drawing style I guess, but this one is more of a design inconsistency. Also Hecate's height is inconsistent. Sometimes Hecate is really tall in Season Two, other times she is almost as short as she was in Season One. Shana also gets too tall from time to time but that's more an issue of occasional spot bad drawing degeneration than an actual overall design change.
One other thing I thought I'd mention is that Episode One is not a rehash of Season One as some people had previously mentioned. Almost every "old" scene has been completely redrawn. There is hardly any re-used old footage in Shana Season Two and there is actually more of it (like two whole seconds) in later episodes (I am thinking of those particular Season One Hecate scenes) than in the first episode. That's good though, if it hadn't been that way it would have been easy to notice how Season One and Season Two look different.

Nearly finished this, a bit of a frustrating season since at its best it's clearly better than any parts from season 1 but those times are short and are the exception. The slow start really hurt this as well...

Oh omnipotent one can you point out a year where that isn't the case in any form of medium? Anime, novels, movies, music and video games?

I'm not surprised this season polarised opinion so much. My own personal view is that season 2 WAS superior, I genuinely enjoyed the high school romance aspect of it. That said, one of the best action set pieces can be found in season 2 (I mean come on, lifting an entire city!),
It did seem that a lot of loose ends were left open, possibly intentionally for season 3. But the character development was enough to satisfy me... Was particular good to see Yuji grow a pair and become a useful part of the partnership.
I liked the love triangle, I'm probably in the minority though!

I feel the same. The slow start hurt (I didn't think it was quite as bad as many seemed to, though) but once it got going around episode 10, it was easily better than the first season.

So as you all know Funimation has gained rights to alot of Geneon's old catalog. Among them is Shakugan No Shana. Now I won't hide it Shakugan No Shana is in my top 3 fav anime of all time. Now with Funimation planning on releasing a Box set I was wondering. What do you think the chances are that Funi will license Shakugan No Shana Second? It's been awhile since the second season ended in Japan and no one has picked it up yet.
If there is one thing I hate it's only getting one season of a show that has more then one season. Also Geneon had the rights to the Shana OVA I wonder if Funi will be releasing that to.

I guess it'll depend on how well Shana season 1 sells if they're start looking into the second season or even the movie. Too bad the movie was just a glorified recap of the first part of season one. The Japanese really love milking their audience over and over for the same exact thing, i.e.: any Gundam ever made has a few recap movies with no new animation.

Recap movies have their places sometimes. For example if you get a second season of a anime and the first season had a recap movie you can simply watch the recap instead of having to devote alot of time to watch the entire first season.
However Shana had both a OVA and a recap movie. I'm pretty sure that Geneon had the rights to the OVA and not the recap movie. Hopefully the box set sells well as I would really like to get my hands on the 2nd season.

Damn SnS is one of my greatest shows Its a perfect mix of fights, humor, anger, epic moments and love for me. And the end of season 1 was so f-cking great, 2nd season ending was a bit wierd but nonethless great And i realy hope a 3d season would come out, because i would surely watch it. And if it wasnt that im living at holland where there are no anime sales i wouldve bought this one for sure.

Shana has finally returned!
I just finished watching the first episode of Shakugan no Shana Final and I have a lot of very positive praise to express regarding the first episode. J.C. Staff has done a fantastic job in constructing a slightly tenebrous atmosphere in an effort to convey to the viewer that this last trip into the world of the flame haze won’t be all sunshine and rainbows. Of course the first episode had the mandatory prolonged fan service scene, but that shouldn’t be any surprise if you’ve been following the Shana franchise throughout the years. If I can say one negative thing about the first episode it would be that the OP felt slightly subpar, but I did enjoy the ED immensely.
The curveball at the beginning of the show demonstrated immediately to me that this season was, more than likely, not going to be repeating the same sort of problems that hindered my enjoyment of season 2. I must confess that I was fully expecting this first episode to be kind of sappy. I already had this mental picture of Yuuji pouring his heart out to Shana for 10 minutes, then him chasing after Yoshida for another 5, and then finally having some sort of plot twist in the end. So, needless to say, I really appreciated that the show didn’t waste any time diving right into some nice meaty plot. (I put this in spoiler tags because I'm sure I'm not the only one who will be surprised when this exact scenario doesn't unfold.)
Can't wait to see how the plot unfolds

My response is pretty much the same as it is for most light novel series. They are initially interesting because they're presenting a neat world and characters, but when it gets time to move the plot... meh.
I loved the first series for the way its characters (aside from the school gang) stood out with their uniqueness, and the way the goals of the bad guys were both incredibly bizarre yet also incredibly honest. The existence of independent, dominating personalities on both sides just running into each other and interacting was amazing.
Seeing it slot into a fairly straightforward "organization of bad guys wants to do bad things" plot in the second series was pretty disappointing, and the existence of Outlaw was a kick in the face to the way the relationships between Flame Hazes was presented between Shana and Margery. Now there's an organization of good guys, too? Things were getting way too familiar.
By this point, seeing long-haired warrior Yuuji just kind of makes me roll my eyes and pine for simpler days, when I felt someone should invent an award for "best segue into ending theme in an anime series."

Well, this is one of the shows I was eagerly anticipating. For the first episode, I enjoyed it. It didn't start off how I expected it to thank God for that and well yeah, I just liked it, can't get more blunt than that. Looks like it will hopefully trump the last season, which was decent/ok at best.
As long as it doesn't go into Season 2 mode, I look forward to more.

Agreed, and for the same reason. The second series and some of the OVA episodes got enormously bogged down in all of the run-of-the-mill relationship hijinks, and the franchise has always felt strongest to me when focusing on its supernatural elements and the direct consequences thereof, so this was a welcome reversion.

So Yuuji is the one with the long hair from the trailers?
I was sure it was a girl... O___O
And he's also the main villain now?!?! Well, it's quite refreshing actually.
But isn't that a bit strange that now that Yuuji is a villain he's also the villains master/leader?
I mean, they were already an established group. Why suddenly a new member will become their leader?

Really did not expect the twist plot from the very begining, it basically threw the feeling from the end of last season in audience. Would not have guessed that they would have Yuuji dissapear, and look like he has turned into a villain or something. Kind of shakes the formulae of the series, which could be a good change of its rut, though I am also a bit worried. Shana is one of the most famous tsundere, and it is one of her most important characteristics.
