I was wondering how many anime fans actually watch american cartoons, and which ones they watch. If you are replying with shows you like, please give reasons why you like the show, or this will become another locked list thread. So many possibly good threads have died that way. Anyway, please give reasons, like this:
Invader ZIM:I love plot development as much as anyone, but sometimes you need something zany. Invader Zim was made when Nickelodian wanted something edgy, and was cancelled halfway through season 2 when they decided they didn't. The show is about an alien invader trying(to no avail) to prepare earth to be converted into a portion of his empire. He was sent to earth because his species didn't know there was a planet there, and hoped to get rid of him. He, however, believes his mission to be of great importance to The Empire. The stories are somewhat plot driven, but are mostly humourous. The most humor, in my opinion, comes from GIR the insane robot given to Zim because its brains are made up of garbage. Here are some quotes from the lovable creation, to give you a sense of this show's humor:
GIR:"Hi floor! Make me a sandwhich!"

(after being handed a pizza by a delivery boy)GIR:(crying)Thank you. (sniff) I love you.

GIR(at the end of a serious, plot driving conversation):
"I like corn."

GIR:"First the giant squirrel showed up. Then the squirrel ate Dib's greasy head. And then the squirrel went back to his home planet to fight l the bad guys. The squirrel and me are friends."

GIR:"I'm dancin' like a monkey!"

(GIR hears doorbell ring)GIR:"Leprecauns!"

Zim:"BE QUIET! DO YOU WANT TO WAKE UP THE WHOLE PLANET!!??"
GIR:I do.
Taken out of context and put into text, it really isn't as funny, really. Its hard to describe Zim, really.
The Simpsons, first few seasons: I loved this series before it was just a bunch of popular guest stars powering episodes. The latest, worst seasons are the reason this show should have died, it's now older than me(by a few days)!!!
Futuama-Funny, not a single bad episode. Ended before it could get bad.
Justice League:Goood plot, superheros that I've loved in american comics for a long time now.
Spider-Man:Good plot, and my favorite american superhero.
Early Disney filicks-You know, before the company was no longer run by the Disney family and became an Empire bent on crushing the dreams of children and animation-watching adults.
Father of the Pride:Funny, great acting, of course meant for mature audiences.
That's all the american animation(past the 80's) that I can enjoy. Go back to the 80's, and their are far too many good series to list. So, what do most anime fans consider good american animation?[/i]

I watch American cartoons all the time mostly because my TV just happens to be on CN a lot. Whatever has come on CN I have probably seen at least a few episodes of. As an American born suburbanite white kid, I grew up on stuff like loony toons and Scooby Doo. It's just something that happens when you grow up in the united states.

I'm into the old-school stuff, like Transformers, Thundercats, Voltron.

The original Transformers and Beast Wars stand out as still my all-time favorites.

Transformers: the Movie is still the best American-based animated movie ever, and still a personal favorite. If you haven't seen it, you should. Death, defeat, rise, and rebirth -- all wrapped up in a story that shook the Transformers universe at that time. (Too bad the TV season that followed the movie left a sour aftertaste, even for a kid.)

Also, once you cut out all the unneccesary "fluff" episodes of Beast Wars (mainly a bunch of first-season episodes along with a few second-season and third-season ones, you are left with a great story featuring very dynamic characters and a wonderful resolution.

I am an invader zim freak. The show is just so demented for the usual cartoons in america, and its sense of humor is right up my alley.

Some of my other all time American animated tv series: Batman, the original early 90s series, and Batman Beyond. The first series just had a fantastic art team that just kept with the original gothic theme perfectly, and the episodes had stories that were fun to watch. Batman Beyond, though shunned by many Batman fans, I found to be really refreshing, and a neat visual style which seemed to borrow quite a bit from anime.

I also loved Gargoyles, one of Disney's more dark offsprings.

And if we're going to go into feature films, I could list off many Disney films, but I think Fox's animation studios were pioneers for American Animation with Titan AE. Their other work, Anastasia, is another personal fave of mine.

Oh yeah, a guilty pleasure of mine is the 80s Heavy Metal animation.

I consider myself a comedy fan. (comedy as in American cartoons, anime comedies, stand-ups, etc.) Even though I think anime comedies are funnier, I still watch American cartoons. I'm a huge South Park fan.

Also, even though I'm 17, I still think the looney toons and Tom and Jerry are funny. It's too bad they don't show LT anymore. Is it true that they edit T&J now? I mean, I heard they may have re-dubbed some of the characters.

It's too bad that censors are more strict now than they were before. I mean, I think LT wouldn't survive the editing if they were shown again. They'd cut off all the guns, Bug scross-dressing, etc. They'd be hacked to 5 minute shorts.

Well, aside from the classic U.S. cartoons that used to air (i.e. X-Men, Batman The Animated Series, and Spiderman), today, I really only watch The Simpsons, Futurama, Venture Brothers on CN, and a little bit of Family Guy.

I like the more "older teen" to "adult" kind of satire stuff (except for South Park, that's just a litte too crude for my tastes sometimes Razz).

But if you put any of those old 80's to early 90's cartoons in front of me, I'll be more than happy to still watch them. Smile

I'm glad I'm not the only one who likes Batman Beyond.

When it was on the air, I heard some people call BB "Spider-Bat" a lot, mostly because of the wall-crawling and the ropes from the hands. I'd just shrug and say "it's still a great show". I was very disappointed when Warner Bros. cancelled it.

Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker (the PG-13 version, not the Y7 one) is still another favorite of mine. The entire Arkham Asylum scene turns into a very distrubing scene when you see it uncut. Still, it provided the best ending for the original Batman Animated Series, and stands on its own as a great film.

I still watch American animated shows. I observe many of the shows that are coming out to see what studios are doing to combat anime and its major franchises.
So far for this year,
The Best:
Teen Titans, Justice League Unlimited, The Venture Brothers, Aqua Teen Hunger Force, TMNT, Foster's, Danny Phantom, Sealab 2021, Harvey Birdman, and Megas XLR
The Worst:
Father of the Pride, Atomic Betty, Jackie Chan Adventures, and especially Da Boom Crew

Other than current shows, I watch repeats of older shows on cable shows.

Megas XLR. That's the best "American anime" or "anime-inspired cartoon" whichever way you put it. I love the anime parodies there.

I am so glad to find fans of good cartoons here(Invader Zim, BB, Gargoyles). I must say though, the simpsons? I mean, that is older than I am, even if by a few days. The show has become a guest star fest, and I can't stand any new episodes, besides maybe a Treehouse of Horrors or two. The last "new" episode I liked(I just stopped watching) was "The Worst Episode Ever".

Depends on your definition of 'American cartoon'

If you mean the usual suspects, like Family Guy and Samurai Jack, then yes, I do watch them occasionally. But there's more to American animation than that. For example, The Plague Dogs and Waking Life are two great, serious movies that more people need to see. Please overlook the fact that the first one is about talking dogs, as it's one of the grimmest pieces of animation I've ever seen. And I even like the old Disney films, before Walt sold his soul (sometime in the 50's).

I've also been getting into Bill Plympton recently, fans of Dead Leaves should really check out his stuff. I've seen a bunch of his shorts, but only one full length movie (I Married a Strange Person!), but it was brilliant. I mean, it opens with two copulating birds crashing into a man's sattelite dish, which sets off all these weird rays that give him the power to make his imagination real. Which sounds kinda boring, until you realize that it later leads to the greatest sex scene in the history of animation. Like I said, Dead Leaves fans would like it.

There's lots of other independant American animation out there, but it's often hard to find. I mean, I really want to see The Old Man and the Sea (just check out this clip!), but it has never been released on video. So I can't. And it sucks.

My favorite American cartoons have always been Aeon Flux and Ren and Stimpy. Why?

Aeon Flux has some of the most intelligent writing you'll find in any American cartoon and Ren and Stimpy has some of the most expressive animation since Tex Avery.

If you can't tell, I am very much into animation. Hoping to become a historian.

Can't believe I forgot about Aeon Flux. Why so many people hate that show is beyond me.
