| Kaiba (TV) | Masterpiece | It's as good as anything can be. What it does, it does well in it's own way, and it's own way is truly owned by it. Some people will berate it for it's minimalist artwork because they their mind automatically associates it with pretentiousness and they make no attempt to really look at the work beyond that, but I really do think it was done well. It can be a little confusing, and it does have that kind of ambiguous ending that is common with Japanese animation so if you want a resolution at the end that will wrap things up nice and tidy with everything resolved, you might want to steer clear of this one because it REALLY is a pretty evident element of this one. It's very original. I don't think I can really say I've seen anything like this show. It's not really the plot or the visuals on their own that's so impressive, but the experience of the show itself. Everything contributes itself in this one. The ideas this show explorers, like identity, memory and the eternal life of a person in the form of another's mind are really pulled through well with the visuals, which along with the plot give a strong sense of exploration. If you're looking for something with fast-paced action, Kaiba won't provide that so much. That's not to say it's overly relaxing like Mushi-Shi nor certainly not that it's boring, but it's definitely not like Akira or Gurren Lagann, for example. More about exploring, I think. |
