3D Magical Play (OAV) |
Good |
|
(The) Adventures of Mini-Goddess (TV) |
Very good |
Cute and funny! |
Ah! My Goddess (TV) |
Very good |
More of Belldandy, Urd, and Skuld is always a good thing. |
Ah! My Goddess: Flights of Fancy (TV) |
Very good |
|
Ah! My Goddess: The Movie |
Very good |
|
Akira (movie) |
Excellent |
An excellent film worthy of the hype. |
Alien Nine (special) |
Excellent |
One surprise after another. Looks cutesy, but is actually quite dark. |
Angelic Layer (TV) |
Excellent |
Naa! Leave it to CLAMP to make a tournament show that's really about the characters! Misaki is just adorable. |
Animation Runner Kuromi (OAV) |
Very good |
Who knew a mockumentary could be this cute? |
Animation Runner Kuromi 2 (OAV) |
Excellent |
Would you believe... even *better* than the first? |
Azumanga Daioh (TV) |
Excellent |
Brilliant in its simplicity. Osaka is my hero. |
Azumanga Daioh - The Very Short Movie |
Good |
|
Bludgeoning Angel Dokuro-chan (TV) |
Good |
This is one seriously messed up show. |
Blue Submarine No.6 (OAV) |
So-so |
So much potential left untapped... |
Bokusatsu Tenshi Dokuro-chan Second (OAV) |
Good |
The wrongness continues. |
Boogiepop Phantom (TV) |
Excellent |
Similar to Lain in style and presentation. More stories in the nonlinear world of Boogiepop. |
Bottle Fairy (TV) |
Very good |
If you don't like cute to the extreme, stay far far away from this show... otherwise, bring on the cavities! |
Burn Up W (OAV) |
Decent |
An imperfect mix of comedy and action (violent action at that!) |
Cardcaptor Sakura (TV) |
Masterpiece |
Hoe~! KERO-CHAN CHECK! Someone convince me "Leave it to Kero" is NOT a cosplay guide... |
Cardcaptor Sakura The Movie 2: The Sealed Card |
Excellent |
|
Cardcaptor Sakura: The Movie |
Excellent |
Captures the feeling of Hong Kong. |
Castle in the Sky (movie) |
Excellent |
|
(The) Cat Returns (movie) |
Excellent |
If this is the next generation of Ghibli, I can hardly wait for more! I couldn't keep the smile off my face watching this movie. Dips into a character type I *never* thought I'd see in a Ghibli movie, and it's pulled off without a hitch! But I won't give it away... |
Chibits (special) |
Good |
Sumomo is easily one of the best characters in the series! |
Chobits (TV) |
Very good |
If only persocoms were real... I'd want one just like Sumomo! (bet you thought I was going to say Chi.) |
Cowboy Bebop (TV) |
Excellent |
This is one of those series that transcends genres. |
Cowboy Bebop: The Movie |
Very good |
|
Destiny of the Shrine Maiden (TV) |
Very good |
Shoujo-ai meets mecha? Gets off to a rocky start, but the ending is good. |
Devil Hunter Yohko (OAV) |
Good |
Starts out... interestingly(?)... but steadily gets better as the episodes progress. |
Elf Princess Rane (OAV) |
Good |
Lots of jokes, not much story. For Akitaroh Daichi fans only. |
Escaflowne: The Movie |
Very good |
An alternate retelling of the series. Tends to be darker than the TV version. |
Fancy Lala (TV) |
Very good |
Cute without going over the top. In a word: Charming. |
Figure 17 (TV) |
Masterpiece |
I did not want this series to end! 80% slice-of-life drama, 20% Metroid, with a tiny dash each of EVA and Aliens... sounds crazy but it works really well. 45 minute long episodes give it a very theatrical feel. A real hidden gem, and tied with Utena as my all-time favorite. |
Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children (movie) |
Very good |
The ultimate guilty pleasure for FFVII fans. |
FLCL (OAV) |
Excellent |
I've watched it four times so far, and I still haven't gotten it all yet! ;-) |
Fruits Basket (TV 1/2001) |
Excellent |
Akitaroh Daichi does it again. His trademark humor goes more low-key in this excellent drama. |
Gakuen Alice (TV) |
Very good |
Very cute and fun with a unique sense of humor. |
Ghost in the Shell (movie) |
Good |
|
(The) Girl Who Leapt Through Time (movie) |
Excellent |
Destined to become a classic. |
Girl's High (TV) |
Good |
A more ecchi version of Azumanga Daioh? Kind of... I was worried at first, but thankfully much of the ecchi fanservice was frontloaded in this series, then it settled down and was a respectable school comedy. Still fanservice-heavy, but enjoyable. |
Grave of the Fireflies (movie) |
Masterpiece |
Someday I will watch this again. But one only needs to see Grave of the Fireflies once. It's that powerful. |
Gunslinger Girl (TV) |
Excellent |
Take Luc Besson's "Leon", add some background sci-fi elements, and that's close to what you get here. If you want non-stop action with cute little girls wielding serious firearms, this is not the show for you. There are some great action sequences, but the main focus is the lives of the girls. |
Haibane Renmei (TV) |
Masterpiece |
Incredible, incredible, incredible. Ties SE Lain as my favorite of ABe's, and my 2nd favorite series overall (by the narrowest of margins). Rakka's innocent questioning of her world makes the show. |
His and Her Circumstances (TV) |
Excellent |
A severely flawed masterpiece. |
Howl's Moving Castle (movie) |
Excellent |
Miyazaki's re-telling of the British fantasy novel. |
InuYasha the Movie 2: The Castle Beyond the Looking Glass |
Very good |
|
InuYasha the Movie 3: Swords of an Honorable Ruler |
Good |
|
InuYasha the Movie: Affections Touching Across Time |
Very good |
Pretty good adventure with Inu Yasha & company. Ironically I think my favorite scenes were the winter scenes at Kagome's temple. |
Itsudatte My Santa! (OAV) |
Good |
Is it wrong that my favorite scene in this "Christmas" series is the one on the beach in the second episode where Maimai is mechanically downing watermelon slices? ;) |
Jubei-Chan 2: The Counterattack of Siberia Yagyu (TV) |
Very good |
Even better than the first! |
Jubei-Chan The Ninja Girl - Secret of the Lovely Eyepatch (TV) |
Very good |
Magical Girl Ninja Action Comedy. Who knew? This series is lots of fun. |
Kaleido Star (TV) |
Masterpiece |
Amazingly wonderful shoujo from Junichi Sato. Very well written and extremely dynamic. |
Kaleido Star: Good dayo! Goood!! (OAV) |
Good |
A trio of fun little shorts. Even if the cel-shaded 3D chibi character designs are a tad creepy. |
Kaleido Star: New Wings Extra Stage (OAV) |
Very good |
Feels a bit rushed compared to the episodes of the series, but it's all about Rosetta so that makes everything ok. |
Kamichu! (TV) |
Excellent |
Laid-back, cute, and a joy to watch. |
Kannagi: Crazy Shrine Maidens (TV) |
Excellent |
A fantastic show which is virtually two different kinds of series in one. |
Kasimasi - Girl Meets Girl (TV) |
Very good |
An interesting twist on shoujo-ai. After a while, you start to forget that Hazumu used to be a boy. I particularly like the character designs for this series. |
Kasimasi - Girl Meets Girl (OAV) |
Very good |
Ties up the burning question left at the end of the series. ;-) |
Kiki's Delivery Service (movie) |
Excellent |
Very cute, Miyazaki does it again. |
Leave it to Kero! Theatrical Version (movie) |
Very good |
|
A Little Snow Fairy Sugar (TV) |
Very good |
Just the right balance between cute and touching. |
A Little Snow Fairy Sugar Summer Special |
Good |
|
Magic Knight Rayearth (TV) |
Good |
This is the rating it would get if the second arc did not exist. (MKR and MKR2 are one complete series and should not be separated.) Taken in proper context, the series overall gets a "Very Good". |
Magic Knight Rayearth 2 (TV) |
Very good |
Leave it to CLAMP! RPG meets Mecha with a Shoujo slant. "Part 1" is required viewing, as that entire arc is the backstory for this one. |
Magic User's Club! (TV) |
Very good |
Junichi Sato hints at what was to come with Princess Tutu. |
Magic User's Club! (OAV) |
Very good |
|
Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha (TV) |
Very good |
A somewhat dark reinvention of the magical girl genre which incorporates some sci-fi as well. |
Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha A's (TV) |
Very good |
Even better than the first season! |
Magical Girl Pretty Sammy (OAV) |
Good |
|
Magical Girl Pretty Sammy Bonus Theatre (OAV) |
Good |
Not technically part of the Bonus Theatre, but the "Pretty Sammy Movie Trailer" gets a resounding "Excellent"! An absolutely brilliant parody trailer, the EVA reference was priceless. |
Magical Play (ONA) |
Excellent |
The Magical Girl Simulator in the last episode makes the entire series worth it! But how can any show where the main character wears a fish *not* be good?! (Do not try to take this series seriously, or you will miss the point.) |
Magical Project S (TV) |
Very good |
Brilliant mahou shoujo sendup! Pixy Misa steals the show, and her image song is hysterical (and I don't even speak Japanese). |
Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi (TV) |
Very good |
Clever genre parody with a coming-of-age backstory by GAINAX. FLCL on lithium. |
Maria Watches Over Us (TV) |
Excellent |
An amazingly well written character drama. Elegance abounds. |
Maria Watches Over Us 3rd Season (OAV) |
Excellent |
|
Maria Watches Over Us Season 2: Printemps (TV) |
Excellent |
The stories of the Lady Roses continue. Drama focused on emotion and character interaction is done to perfection in this series. |
(The) Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (TV) |
Excellent |
In broadcast order, this is Boogiepop Phantom meets Azumanga Daioh... kind of. But not really. |
Mobile Suit Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket (OAV) |
Very good |
|
Mobile Suit Gundam Wing (TV) |
Very good |
The series that eventually turned me into a full-fledged anime fan in 2000. Takes itself waaaaay too seriously at times (but by no means is it "bad") but being the first series I ever owned, I get nostalgic whenever I watch it. |
Mobile Suit Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz Special Edition (movie) |
Very good |
|
Moldiver (OAV) |
Good |
|
MoonPhase (TV) |
Excellent |
A supernatural drama with just the right amount of quirky humor. Cutesy meets dark, and it works very well. |
My Neighbor Totoro (movie) |
Masterpiece |
Required viewing for anyone who was ever a child. ;) |
My Neighbors the Yamadas (movie) |
Excellent |
Wow. A series of slice-of-life shorts, done in a more experimental animation style, this was amazing to watch. |
My-HiME (TV) |
Very good |
A lot better than I was expecting! Pretty good for a show about cute girls with special powers. |
Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (movie) |
Masterpiece |
|
Neon Genesis Evangelion (TV) |
Excellent |
I must be one of the 5 people in the world who actually liked the last 2 episodes the way they were... |
Neon Genesis Evangelion: Death & Rebirth (movie) |
Very good |
Highly compressed version of episodes 1-24 (not recommended for EVA newbies, you won't catch everything if you haven't already seen the series), and Act 1 of End of Evangelion. Overall not bad, but for EVA completists only. |
Neon Genesis Evangelion: The End of Evangelion (movie) |
Excellent |
Not so much "alternate ending" as the another side of the same coin. The series ended with a study of Shinji's psyche as the Human Instrumentality Project began, the movie shows us what "really happened". And it still takes much effort to wrap your brain around it. |
NieA_7 (TV) |
Excellent |
The second series ABe was a part of. Poor Mayuko, she tries so hard, I just want to give her a big hug. With a roommate like NieA, how does she sleep at night? |
Ninja Scroll (movie) |
Weak |
Just not my cup of tea anymore. |
Noein - to your other self (TV) |
Very good |
A series based on quantum physics? And yet it's presented in a way that can be understood even without a doctorate in science? Who knew?! |
Noir (TV) |
Very good |
Very stylish series with a great soundtrack. |
Now and Then, Here and There (TV) |
Excellent |
Profound and brilliant |
Oh My Goddess! (OAV) |
Excellent |
Cute and funny drama. Skuld is the best! |
Omishi Magical Theater Risky Safety (TV) |
Very good |
Shoujo in convenient bite-sized pieces. Equal parts drama and comedy. |
Outlaw Star (TV) |
Very good |
Space pirates, asian mysticism, a ninja, a catgirl, an android, all in the same series? On top of that, the closest description of a genre I can think of is Space Western. Somehow, they pull it off, and the result is one of the most fun series out there! |
Paranoia Agent (TV) |
Excellent |
An amazing mindtrip. |
Piano (TV) |
Very good |
Character driven and relaxing to watch. |
Planetes (TV) |
Excellent |
Realistic sci-fi and a great character drama. |
Pokémon 2000 - The Movie (movie 2) |
Decent |
|
Pokémon: The First Movie (movie 1) |
Decent |
|
Porco Rosso (movie) |
Excellent |
A great adventure. |
(Le) Portrait de Petite Cossette (OAV) |
Very good |
I need to watch this again to pick up on everything... there's a lot in these three episodes. |
Princess Mononoke (movie) |
Excellent |
|
Princess Nine (TV) |
Very good |
Surprise surprise, shoujo and sports? Yup, it can be done. The baseball is just a plot device anyway, it's really about the characters. |
Princess Tutu (TV) |
Excellent |
Another great atypical fairy tale, following in the footsteps of Utena. |
Project A-ko (movie) |
Very good |
|
Rayearth (OAV) |
Good |
This is not connected in any way to the TV series. It's the dark, apocalyptic version of Rayearth... The good: well-executed action, excellent character design, set in "real-world" Tokyo. The not-so-good: light on development and a nebulous plot. |
Revolutionary Girl Utena (TV) |
Masterpiece |
Sits next to Figure 17 as my all-time favorite series. A surrealistic fairy tale, yet so much more. Metaphors and symbolism are sprinkled generously throughout the whole series. That would make it an allegory, wouldn't it? ;) |
Revolutionary Girl Utena: The Movie |
Masterpiece |
Where do I begin? The entire film (especially the finale) is saturated with symbolism (it makes the Utena series, or even SE: Lain, seem like strict narrative in comparison!), the soundtrack is easily one of the best I have ever heard, and cannot be seperated from the visuals... I get goosebumps just *thinking* about this movie! And the last few times I've watched it, I've had to put it on twice a few days apart just to absorb it all! |
Rumiko Takahashi Anthology (TV) |
Very good |
Paranoia Agent Lite, in some ways. That's not a bad thing, by the way. |
S-CRY-ed (TV) |
Good |
Sci-fi action. Nothing groundbreaking here, but fun to watch. |
Sailor Moon (TV) |
Good |
Back in the day - the mid 90s - I would watch this when it was shown on TV after school. And it's still one of my favorite series. Voltron excepted, this is my first anime that I knew was anime. |
Sailor Moon R (TV) |
Good |
|
Sailor Moon R: The Movie |
Good |
|
Sailor Moon S (TV) |
Very good |
Two words: Hotaru Tomoe. Two more words: Kunihiko Ikuhara. |
Sailor Moon S: The Movie |
Good |
My cat's name is Luna because of Sailor Moon. |
Sailor Moon SuperS (TV) |
Good |
|
Sailor Moon SuperS Plus - Ami's First Love (special) |
Good |
Ami is my favorite character in Sailor Moon (along with Mako and Hotaru), and here she gets to shine, and be a little more outgoing as well. She's pretty cute with glasses too... |
Sailor Moon SuperS: The Movie |
Good |
|
Sakura Taisen: Sumire (OAV) |
Good |
Mainly for Sumire or Michie Tomizawa fans. |
Sakura Wars (OAV) |
Good |
Pales in comparison to the TV version, but still entertaining. |
Sakura Wars (TV) |
Good |
Theatre troupe of Japanese girls pilots steam-driven mecha with their spiritual power to protect the capital? I'm in! |
Sakura Wars 2 (OAV) |
Very good |
Great character stories! |
Sakura Wars: The Movie |
Good |
If you prefer more battles with your Sakura Wars, look here. |
Samurai Champloo (TV) |
Excellent |
Another great juxtaposition from Cowboy Bebop's Shinichiro Watanabe. |
Sasami: Magical Girls Club (TV) |
Very good |
The furthest removed Tenchi spinoff, but still a cute and fun show even without Chisa Yokoyama in the title role. The five new voice actresses - all in their mid-teens playing their first roles - make the main characters' voices certainly age-appropriate. |
Sasami: Magical Girls Club Season 2 (TV) |
Very good |
The first season introduced us to the girls, and this season gives a more plot-oriented story. |
School Rumble (TV) |
Very good |
Just as fun as the manga! |
School Rumble: 2nd Semester (TV) |
Excellent |
Somehow even more craziness than the first series! |
School Rumble: Extra Class (OAV) |
Very good |
Yakumo and Sarah fans, rejoice. |
Serial Experiments Lain (TV) |
Masterpiece |
The series that got me hooked on anything ABe, and one of my all time favorite series. Almost non-linear in the way it is told, (episodes are actually 'layers'... that is one indication) I'm still trying to put all the pieces together! |
She and Her Cat (OAV) |
Good |
|
Simoun (TV) |
Very good |
An unexpected mix of genres that works pretty well. |
Someday's Dreamers (TV) |
Very good |
Very slow paced, and definitely a character piece. Once it picks up it's nearly over, but the ending made it all worth it. |
Spirited Away (movie) |
Masterpiece |
|
Starship Girl Yamamoto Yohko (TV) |
Very good |
Much more cohesive than the OVAs. A fun series that I wish would get an R1 DVD release someday. Schoolgirls piloting spaceships. What else do you need? |
Starship Girl Yamamoto Yohko (OAV) |
Good |
Along with SGYYII (same characters but completely unrelated plot) this is a fun little series, despite breaking no new ground. I can't watch Lain and Utena all the time you know... ;) |
Starship Girl Yamamoto Yohko II (OAV) |
Good |
Yamamoto Yohko is probably the most obscure favorite show of mine. |
Stellvia (TV) |
Excellent |
One of the best sci-fi shows I've seen. An excellent space drama. |
Strawberry Marshmallow (TV) |
Excellent |
Cute, cute, cute! |
Tenchi Forever!: The Movie |
Very good |
Not your usual Tenchi fare... this is an outright drama. |
Tenchi in Tokyo (TV) |
Good |
The most comedic entry in the series. |
Tenchi Muyo! (OAV 1/1992) |
Excellent |
A classic. |
Tenchi Muyo! Mihoshi Special |
Good |
|
Tenchi Muyo! Ryo Ohki (OAV 3/2003) |
Very good |
|
Tenchi Muyo! Ryo Ohki: Final Confrontations (OAV) |
Very good |
|
Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki (OAV 2/1994) |
Excellent |
|
Tenchi Muyo! The Night Before The Carnival (OAV) |
Excellent |
|
Tenchi the Movie - Tenchi Muyo in Love |
Very good |
A great sci-fi adventure. Stands on its own as a good movie even if you haven't seen the series. |
Tenchi The Movie 2 - The Daughter of Darkness |
Good |
|
Tenchi Universe (TV) |
Very good |
This and the first two OVAs were one of the first shows I got into after becoming an anime fan. I still enjoy them to this day. |
Texhnolyze (TV) |
Excellent |
Bleak sci-fi. If you want a dystopian show, look no further. |
Trigun (TV) |
Very good |
|
(The) Vision of Escaflowne (TV) |
Excellent |
One of the best fantasies I've ever seen. |
Voices of a Distant Star (OAV) |
Very good |
A lot is accomplished here in 30 minutes. I wish I could make a movie like this on my home computer! |
Whisper of the Heart (movie) |
Masterpiece |
An absolutely wonderful slice of life story. |
Witch Hunter Robin (TV) |
Excellent |
Suspenseful, atmospheric, and supernatural. |
(The) World of Narue (TV) |
Good |
Fun and cute. I want more! |
X (TV) |
Excellent |
CLAMP's take on the apocalyptic fantasy. |
Xenosaga: The Animation (TV) |
Good |
A fair adaptation of the first game in the series, with a few changes |
