Frames Per Second magazine has
posted its interview with Akira Tochigi, the curator of "To the Source of Anime" retrospective of early 20th-century Japanese animation. In the interview, Tochigi
confirmed that the recently discovered film shorts from nine decades ago will be shown after their digital restoration. He also traced the path of animation in Japan from its foreign roots to its effects on Japanese society and government. He described the ironic influences of American animation in Japanese wartime propaganda and the innovative methods Japanese animators used to cope with the post-war slump. Finally, he describes the individual styles of various Japanese and international animators.
