Although the Earth Alliance and ZAFT forces have signed the Junius Seven Treaty in order to end the First Bloody Valentine War, both sides still begin an arms race. A paramilitary group called Phantom Pain, which is controlled by Blue Cosmos/Logos terrorist group, steals three of ZAFT's newest Mobile Suits. Shinn Asuka and the rest of the crew of the ZAFT battleship Minerva, along with Athrun Zala (who assumes a false name), pursue the Phantom Pain but then encounter rogue ZAFT soldiers who intend to drop the Junius Seven colony upon the Earth. After failing to destroy the Junius Seven colony, the Second Bloody Valentine War breaks out, once news has spread that ZAFT soldiers caused the colony to fall to Earth.
