I guess it's time to go into debt again and buy the R boxset.

Even for being a good seller, it probably isn't selling enough to cover the cost of the license. Sailor Moon is a hot property, after all.

While this is unfortunate, perhaps another company down the road will pick up the distribution rights. At least I certainly hope so, I have yet to see either season yet.

From the sounds of the article, it seems that its the Japanese companies fault that they arn't renewing the license, not ADVs..

Anyone know for certain?

Hah. Now that you mention it, it does lean more towards the Japanese company simply saying "Nope, you don't get to have it anymore." *yoink*

Seems the producers of Sailor Moon have a few issues with American distribution. First they pretty much put their foot down and say "NO" to any licensing of STARS, and now they're denying the first two uncut seasons.

deepdiscountdvd.com has both sets for $40 each..but I think they are on backorder.

Rumor over at AoD's forums is that ADV had these seasons sublicensed through DiC and that DiC's license is the one running out the end of the month. (ADV would lose the license too.) Evidentally the dubbed DVDs are stopping too.

Wonderful, now I need to get the 1st 82 episodes.

One more thing: It's a shame that they stopped allowing ADV to keep the rights since I've never seen the first 82 episodes uncut.

The better question is "If the license for these series in the US is dying, will the fansubbers pick them up?"

Anime cry We're such a sad, miserable crew of sailors here.

Bah, it seems Sailor Moon liscenseing is cursed in the US or something. I hate Toei. First they aparently don't allow any companies to distro Sailor Stars for the US, and then they block off Battle Royale as well... course that's a different subject. Are they too freaked out about getting a bad name or something?

>.< No money for Sailor Moon. Dammit, this sucks. Somehow I get the feeling that there will be no companies willing to pick up the tab for it unless pioneer did really well on the other seasons.

*sigh* yet another reason to despise Toei, I guess. This really does appear to be them refusing to relicense the series to ADV, who AFAIK is the sole holder of the license for Seasons 1/2. I suppose this could be a move to get Pioneer to pick them up, since ultimately ADV would want to license STARS, which will never happen. Go read some of the Answerman columns for his take on why, which I happen to agree with, even thoough I think it's a total cop-out on Toei's part.

It's a shame, but the property is undergoing somewhat of a rennasaince (probably misspelled that) in Japan and is undoubtedly getting more expensive by the day for ADV.

And let's be honest, we're talking about a shoujo magical girl series from the early 90's with 82+ episodes. Unless you're making hand over fist money with it on television, it's pretty hard to justify that sort of property when you've already got your hand in so many other pies.

Take heart, eBay will undoubtedly have plenty of oppurtunities to collect all of the ADV released episodes. Though I will say this, ADV has just made Christmas shopping for my little sister that much more difficult.

I suppose it will be interesting to watch the prices climb on eBay as the stocks run out. I wonder if we'll start seeing fansubs on eBay for the first 2 seasons. Wish the prices had come down when I bought the sets (paid full price for each), but at least I have them.

BTW, does anyone know if the Pioneer/Geneon releases are affected as well?

I don't think Toei's stupid enough to kill its sales unless it had an ulterior motive. My theory is Toei's pulling a Disney by shelving the first two seasons, and then re-releasing them at a later time in an effort to generate higher demand and a larger bottom line. In other words, that "in stores only for a limited time" bs. I also have a feeling they're going to try to sell the broadcast rights for the
live-action show in the near future to international markets to pump up sales for the anime.

littlegreenwolf: No one wanted to touch Battle Royale, so they took it back. Toei shouldn't be the one to blame, even if they were charging a high premium for licensing.

Like Cassandra said, it's most likely that DIC's liscense is going out, and ADV was working with them and the rights they had. Pioneer has a different contract going on, and I think they have at least a good year or so before their rights expire... they renew their stuff, don't they?
