I agree, Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 is an incredible series, and I'm really glad to see it released stateside. That said, I don't think I can ever watch the series again. I saw it when it first aired, and like everyone else, was bawling by the end. But after living through the Touhoku Quake (I lived in Yokohama at the time), it just hits a little too close to home. I highly recommend the series, but I think I'll have to pass on picking up a copy.

spoiler[Overly melodramatic flashback/recounts of a dear departed work like that, they're designed to bring up a well of emotions. It's exactly the same as the end of AnoNatsu.] Otherwise, no terribly powerful emotions before that, it's just mostly and interesting piece of fiction that's sort of based on real possibility. I see a difference between this and what happened in 2011, given that the Tohoku quake's biggest disaster was the tsunami, and mostly affected coastal villages. I'd like to see more Space Insurance Fraud if it stops being so against being fun. It always felt like a non-started of a series, like it wasn't sure of its premise or ideas until the very end, and it turns out that's all made up for the anime. Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 aired back when the noitaminA association actually meant something. While it does have its unnecessary moments of disaster porn - the spoiler[Tokyo Tower collapses and the children have to dodge it, and it misses them by just metres] - it also has some truly touching moments. My favourite scene from the whole show is the old man in episode five, who quietly laments that he survived and yet spoiler[so many young people (including his own grandchildren) died.] Heartbreaking stuff.

I gotta disagree with this. I preferred the show when it stuck to the novels. The original stuff, while cool, really felt like a different show than the one I fell in love with. To each their own, I guess. Also; Tokyo Magnitude's out? Welp. I need to go shopping now. |

I have to agree with the other guy, Tokyo Magnitude sounds way too much like that show with the friendship circle where the one girl is dead mixed with a little grave of the fire flies.spoiler[ And of course they got to kill off the only male character as well. ]To me shows like this feel cheap, not sad, like the only goal of the show was to make people sad not merely used as a tool for something more.

Sometimes I think there is great value in sadness. Watching Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 made me want to be a better person, more like Mari and less like some of the super crappy people they run into. It made me reflect on how rotten I was as a teenager, and how time changes people. It made me pick up the phone and call my little brother. Was the twist at the end kind of cheap? A little, but I got a lot out of all the episodes leading up to it. There's nothing wrong with a show that tries to make people sad. |

Agree about Bodacious Space Pirates, I found the epic space battles towards the end much more entertaining than the story arc or two that came before it. Still overall really enjoyable though.

People may give Sentai a hard time, but they are the only company left that is awesome enough to release shows like Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 and Kids on the Slope in the US with a DUB. I am really thankful for that. I love Funimation, but they have not released a single thing this year that I can say was as emotionally intense as 8.0 or Penguindrum.

If only Sentai would demand they get decent 1080p master from Japan rather than relatively substandard 1080i ones. And get Stephen Foster to take his hands out of the translation cookie jar.

Was anyone really shocked by the twist in Tokyo Magnitude? I thought it was pretty obvious after spoiler[Mari's breakdown in the hospital.] Really felt like they dragged it out way too long to keep the show interesting. Up to 5 I would've given the show an excellent rating, but after that it just became okay.

Says the person with a Saikano avatar and much like that show, Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 is more a rental than a buy. Well, for me at least but not for the reason you'd expect. Unlike comedies, you can never fully recapture the unguarded emotions from primary viewings of tragedies. I'll watch it, certainly, I even expect it to start on Anime Network in a few weeks but to revel in it on HD Blu-Ray {Get your Tokyo destruction in eye popping HD!} seems so very wrong. And I'm another fan of Space Pirate Girls who preferred the series when it stuck with the Space Pirate Girls rather than the cliches of old pirates, old pirate cliches and both which seems kind of wierd considering they're supposed to be space pirates. There's the hat but it is a nice hat after all so that's ok. My biggest problems with the end of the series were all the plot twists regarding the Bentenmaru crew which were 1) unnecessary and 2) didn't make any sense. Especially, oh hey, the {massive spoiler but you know what I mean}. I understand the "why" of it, vaguely, but the "how" is just dumb. Final verdict: It was fun while it stuck to the miniskirts but when it thought it could get serious, it got lost at space sea. |
