Nice how it can the mangaka has been able to do this for so long. He started this in the 70's.
I wonder how long it'll go though. Nostalgia is probably the main reason why it's still on-going, much like Sazae-San (The anime). |

That's likely the main driving force, but I also think they're all probably enjoyable enough in their own right, or else they'd only have adult readers (i.e. not much 'new blood'). After seeing things like this, I feel a lot "safer" in my decision to collect manga like Bleach, Negima! and Naruto. Over 100 volumes? Oh, how my wallet shrieks in terror... |

I think it's more the timeless nature of Kochikame. It always takes in place in the "present-day", no matter what decade it is, which allows it to poke fun at real-life celebrities and events. It's why Kochikame is commonly called the Japanese-equivalent of The Simpsons. It doesn't matter how old you are, since Kochikame will continually keep with the times. |

I believe that Osamu Akimoto started this manga in 1976--some 36 years ago. It's probably the longest continuously-running manga series in Japanese history, and Kochikame is definitely qualifies for "institution" status in Japanese pop culture.
And gawd, this series has taken a lot of potshots at current Japanese culture, to say the least--including all types of videogames (Ryoutsu, the main character, loves to play videogames). |

The crazy thing is that Osamu Akimoto is apparently one of, if not the prompt mangaka in the business, rarely, if ever, missing a deadline. That's pretty much who Kochikame is longer than Golgo 13, even though Golgo is older than Kochikame. Akimoto's continual promptness is all the more crazy when you consider the fact that he's done other mangas while doing Kochikame at the same time. |
