The show already had 2 showrunners. Not to mention that the shooting for season 2 is finished and they're currently in post production. Besides as Matt said he's taking a break, not quitting altogether.

An important reminder that whoever fills his place is still going to have to answer to Oda.
Hopefully he is able to recover.

He is taking a mental health break yes, but he is probably not coming back on the show. He said new adventures. If a season three is green lighted and he is not available, then someone else will be hired.

Frankly the season 3 being greenlit is what I'm more worried about. Netflix renewing anything past 2 seasons is a minor miracle. I mean, I guess I hope that season 2 is good first, because then I'll actually want a season 3.

Rumor has it that season 3 is already greenlit. From what I've heard talk of season 2 is just Rouge Town to Drum and Alabaster is going to get its own dedicated season. This is reasonable since Alabaster is half of Croc's saga.

I’m not worried for 2 main reasons, first off, the post only says he’s taking a break, which means that this might not be a permanent step down. Which means that while he won’t be a showrunner for Season 3, he could potentially come back in a later season. Second the most difficult part’s of adapting One Piece are over, at least for while, the next few arcs after Alabasta shouldn’t be as difficult to adapt. The biggest issue was always going to be setting up the world introducing the characters, finding a way to condense down the early story arcs into a manageable length, and most importantly figuring out how to translate the manga into Live Action. After successfully making season 1 work Alabasta was always going to be difficult due to the length of the arc, and the fact that the first half the arc is comprised of a bunch of mini arcs. Them deciding to split Alabasta into 2 seasons made it way easier to adapt, and the most difficult part of adapting the arc is done now as it shouldn’t be too difficult to make the main part of the saga work in 8 episodes. The next arc after Alabasta, Skypeia is also both shorter than what they adapted for the first 3 seasons, not broken up into 4-5 mini arcs like the first 2 sagas. They’ve also laid down the groundwork that longer arcs can be split up into multiple seasons, and Oda is still involved, so I think the show should be fine for a while at least

The show lost both initial showrunners before S2 could finish post-production. This is a tough gig, I get it. Both Matt Owens and Steven Maeda, who only worked on S1, not being involved in the editing process of S1 led to a worse product. Owens literally said so. Owens' departure from the project now and not in half a year will again lead to diminishing results. Films can be made in the edit. That is why Star Wars 1977 won its Oscar.
No one who set up the project will also be involved in the casting of S3, which is arguably S2 Part 2. Not great. Hire back Steven Maeda, who has 2 decades of work experience on Maeda, end of story.
