Update: Shueisha added to article's title. Takehiko Inoue celebrated the 100 millionth book of his Slam Dunk manga in 2004. According to the Daily Cyzo website, Kochira Katsushika-ku Kamearikouen-mae Hashutsujo sold 150 million copies as of the 164th volume last year.

So in order according to the article:

1- One Piece, 189 million
2- Dragon Ball, 152 million
3- KochiKame, 150 million
4- Slam Dunk, 100 million (plus whatever's sold since '04)
5- Naruto, 100 million and change

Any idea how far back the next bunch of titles are? For example, where would Bleach be on this list? 80 million?

no, that would be a shame for the industry... while the art of this manga is super sharp and has unique style and hardly can be topped, the content is horrible cliche and uninspired repeated mess ("a girl is captured, and others go to save her"... twice in row? What a shame for the "story")...

Oh, that happened like 15 times in Saint Seiya, and with the same girl even. Bleach still has a long way to go, imo.

Didn't know One Piece had beaten Dragon Ball. And it's still halfway through. Goodie.

Yeah...I don't think one should argue about what is necessarily "deserved" in getting 100 mil. There's too much to qualify.

Does Bleach entertain me, despite its flaws? It does, and thus I have no qualms as to whether it should or should not sell well.

I'm just excited that One Piece is doing that well! Screw Naruto, the sales record show who the king of manga (and Pirates!) is!

Wait you're complaining about Bleach being cliched but aren't complaining about Naruto, or for that matter One Piece?

Whoa. Going by the numbers, it's really only a matter of time before we see Kochira Katsushika-ku Kamearikouen-mae Hashutsujo* released over here in the states. Right? Razz

*what an obscenely long title.

Whoa, I knew Slam Dunk used to be popular, but that's just amazing. Can't wait to see OP surpass 200. Arrow

I doubt that.

Looking at the total sales / volume count:

Completed Series:
- Slam Dunk, 114M / 31 = 3.7 (2008 numbers)
- Dragon Ball: 152M / 42 vols = 3.6

On-going Series:
- One Piece: 189M / 57 vols = 3.3
- Naruto: 100M / 50 vols = 2.0
- KochiKame, 150M / 168 vols = 0.9

So, Kochikame's numbers per volume is not that high. Besides, taking a 160+ vols project is a huge commitment.

For those who are interested in position 6 and above, you can see the 2008 results (probably won't be much different): http://comipress.com/article/2008/12/31/3733

I own all 47 currently released English volumes plus the fanbook. Does that count?
