The tag-line for this review reminded me of this. Good ol' Kyle.
But the review is accurate. Somehow, despite it's faults, which become even more undeniable with age, many of us still have a blast watching these guys pummel each other to a pulp. Emerje |

After all the hullaballoo broke with the box sets, I decided to hold off. I picked up the first Dragon Box at a discount, and I will likely do so for this set since the price is right (I think it is on special at Right Stuf for $35.99). I will get Kai only if it is released on Blu-Ray - although even in condensed mode the Frieza fight is still WAY too long!

I can't fathom why anyone would pay for this glorified filler, especially with Kai nearing release.

Because Kai has its own problems despite being streamlined? Say what you will about the condensed version being an advantage for the non DBZ viewer, but I'd rather sit through the nostalgia (or, in some cases, watch it with the fast forward button) of the often hit or miss filler then go through the horrible and/or glaringly noticeable "Deviant Art" frames.
The only thing I could be possibly be excited about is the prospect of a new dub and even that is ten years too late (where as the Japanese cast has gotten bad with age). I'd be willing to give it a chance till after Kai's been released for a long while. |

Kai adds nothing new to the mix,so why bother? |

This. And also, as Son-kun said a lot of us would be more interested in getting the old series, even if it is bloated. I gobbled this stuff up when it was on TV, so why wouldn't I want what I remember so fondly? Ultimately, I couldn't make myself sit through Kai because it was just a shorter version of what I had seen already. |

I can't honestly fathom why anyone would buy Dragonball Z at all, period. Seriously, there are more interesting shows someone can waste their time watching. Why do they keep intending on glorifying a series that's this boring and dead?

Because it's fun? Not everything has to be high art. In every form, every adaptation of this franchise, something remains consistant, the ability to put a smile on a person's face. That in itself makes up for any short comings it may have. |

I've never really watched dragon ball I think that I'm probably to old now to get anything out of it since I won't be getting any nostalgia out of it :/

I watched this show sometimes as a kid and never understood why it was so popular.
I still don't. But hey, if it sells, it sells. |

I can't entirely agree with this. It took some of them a while to get back into the groove in Kai, but for the most part, they did. The only one who sounds weathered badly is Ryo Horikawa's Vegeta, but I think it's because Horikawa smokes. If this is what his Vegeta sounds like now, I'd hate to hear his Reinhard von Lohengramm now. Tohru Furuya sounds the same now as he did decades ago. He has this strange unaging voice. If I were the authorities, I'd investigate. But I do have the same issues with Kai, if not more. It doesn't seem like it was made for me, though. That's why I'm probably sticking to these Dragon Boxes. |

You know the reason why Shonen Jump anime in general (but especially Dragonball in particular) seem poorly paced becomes obvious when you realize that they were all based on a weekly comic series.
Things like Freeza's imfamous "5 minutes till the planet explodes" are absurd in the anime because they take place over several episodes whereas they might actually go by in a few minutes if you're reading out of the tankoubon. Anyone who's read scans of Naruto or Bleach as they come out each week can tell you that the series seems to drag on forever. But then if they read the collected volumes later it seems to go by much better. The same thing is to blame for the "Why don't they stop talking and start fighting" problem. Dialogue in a comic is just text on a page, it doesn't really take up any time. But in anime all dialogue has to be spoken (even the characters' thoughts!). So of course it seems to take forever in comparison. Not to mention the way people think it's ridiculous how there are characters in anime whose sole purpose seems to be sitting on the sidelines and explaining everything that you can obviously see is happening. Well, in a manga all you have is individual panels. So a lot of times you need someone explaining what's going on or else the reader could have trouble figuring it out from the artwork. These problems with Shonen Jump anime are only so prevalent because of the long running trend to try and copy them panel by panel into animation. An episode director needs to know that a certain amount of adaptation work needs to be done to make seamless transition into a TV show. Comics are not animation! My guess is that DBZ suffers the most from poor pacing because it was made back in the early days of Shonen Jump manga adaptations. We've gotten a little better since then. Naruto and Bleach at least started out with high quality, but have now degrade seriously.
Just because anime is old, doesn't make it dead. Now, I'm sure I agree that Dragonball isn't really good enough to warrant the kind of sales figure it gets. But it's far from being a waste of time.
I completely disagree with the widespread idea that the only positive thing Dragonball has to offer is nostalgia. If you like other Shonen Jump series like Naruto or Bleach or One Piece, the I don't see why you wouldn't like Dragonball. It's very similar in feel; it's just gotten a horrible rep from years of America's exposure to mostly the awfully Americanized English version. |

Namek saga is what turned me off about DBZ back in the day. 30 episodes of Gohan and Krillin hiding from Freeza while Goku does jumping jacks in space is not my idea of a good time.

Come on, that's not accurate! He also glues himself to the outside of the ship and drinks a sports drink! |

Of course, because Saiyans who can survive nuclear explosions and the vacuum of space need their electrolytes, too. |
