From this review I can guess that if Rin were made into a live action feature, it would star Shannon Tweed or Shannon Whirry...
I remember seeing a preview for Mnemosyne some time ago & it looked interesting, may have to pick it up.
Zac, your tweets about Rin were pretty funny especially the one about the things you thought you'd never get tired of watching anime characters do.

You know that shot glass prize for this series' contest is a great idea since you can easily make this a drinking game. And I'm really damn curious on how that DVD cover feels!

Ehhh... Sounds a bit too violent for me. (Hell, I get queasy in Tarantino movies.) I'll probably have to give this one a pass. [/pansy]

Ah nice review...I've been planning on buying this, and now your making me have to buy it, with this review. From the clips I saw, this was the type of show I would expect. It seems trashy, but interesting, and "adult" but not really "mature". Guess I was right with that guess . From one of those clips I saw, I can tell this show is INSANE. Like they're really nuts with the violence and sex here lol. Perhaps not as bad as Gantz with the violence or gore, but still some rought and tough stuff here. I love me some violence every now and again .
One thing though, ganna have to disagree with your Speed Grapher remarks. I felt that show stayed edgy, without getting to immature/stupid. But that's just me I guess.

To be honest, I'm a little disapointed with this review...
Not because of Zac per se, but because I've been considering this title for about 1 month and a half, and while Chris Beveridge's review helped motivate me with his well-rounded score of "A+", Zac's review pushed me back towards the realm of uncertainty again...
It's nice to know Funi did a great dub job, that the show looks and "sounds" great, and that for being an experimental OVA series it did well in the story department
I couldn't help but feel that Zac has somthing against "60% = gore/sex and 40% = typical anime fare", and Speed Grapher often gets bashed on ANN, as a matter of fact...
Though I get where your coming from, when you say this is a "Cinemax" type of anime, I don't think a story score of "C" really helps point out it's a unique story. I remember a review of Berserk on this site having a story score of "A+" and both have that "innovative storytelling" that many critics seem to sing. Not to mention that are "up there" on the content scale...
All in all, it was a good review. I'm still unsure (though I might just buy the Blu-ray edition...) whether to purchase, but at least Zac illustrated the point that it has a lot of "mature" content enough!
Hey Zac! Give Speed Grapher another chance! It's not the shiniest coin you'll pick up on anime lane, but if you polish and examine it carefully, underneath all that gunk, you'll feel a genuine sense of honesty with a plot that's as enjoyable as it is familiar! And yes, it doesn't look good, but hey! If I learned one thing about anime is that there are some pretty fascinating plots locked away in the grittier looking ones! Gonzo may not be what it once was, but their methods of storytelling are always what I've loved about them...

Oh Mnenosyne... I remember watching a certain Youtube clip involving Mimi -- you know the one -- a couple thousand times. Good times. The plot? Who cares about the plot when you have lesbians and people getting juiced by jet engines. This is 80s OAVs cheese at it's finest.

@ Otaking:
That's the problem with letter/number systems. People always ask why stuff is a certain grade rather than think about what the review said. A's and C's mean nothing.

ha ha now I really cant wait to watch it! I saw the trailer thought it was dirrty (yes like the song) and the animation was nice to look at. I loved Gantz and I pretty much love anything in that genre that doesn't involve hurting little girls or pre-teen loli girls (o wait that's the same thing! j/k lol) I usually agree with Zac on most shows they talk about on ANNcast so I should like it too.
Definitely a buy! Down with illegal streaming/downloading!

If this were a different circumstance, I'd agree COMPLETELY with you. But I actually read every part of his review, and his discriptions of story were leaning more towards "discouragement" than "appreciation".
Yes, I'll say that A's and C's mean nothing, ultimately. But, from what I've heard from other people and critics, was that this OVA was special, in that it remeinded them of how 80's OVA stories used to be, and how happy it made them, to see some studios trying to make quality despite the recession.
Zac's review shocked me, in that he seemed to call it a more "adult-focused 'Skinemax'(funny!) show" and didn't seem to notice the nostalgia that other reviews lacked.
Not blaming Zac, because everyone's different. But his leaning to one side of the overall picture just ruffled my feathers a bit...

I got really lost in Mnemosyne about halfway through, and started to care a bit less after a while. What I did like a lot were the openings and endings. They were pretty damn awesome. I'd call this anime a definite one to watch once.

Great review Zac.
I pre-ordered from Amazon and watched the first episode yesterday. Zac hit the nail on the head with this review. Rin will not have you re-discovering anime but it will keep you entertained. I'm looking forward to watching the rest of the episodes.
I laughed at the Cinemax reference. As kids we would try to watch the scrambled "late night" signal. I remember squinting at the screen in the hope that it would help me see better. Someone would say, "wait, wait...I think that was a nipple!"

You do realize that Rin and Berserk are two completely different series with two completely different forms of storytelling right? You're basically stating they're the same because that appeal to mature audiences, try to not get all riffled up because someone has a different opinion than you.

I believe Zac and another reviewer went into fine detail into what was wrong with Speed Grapher and I agree with them, it felt like it was trying far too hard to be edgy with it's over the top content when it was really just silly and immature. Rin doesn't come off that way atleast IMHO, yes there's lots of sex both gay and straight and it often times felt pandering to appeal to different fetishes (there's a particular scene in episodes 3 and 5 that goes borderline hentai with this) and violence but it flowed well with the story that it didn't become the sole aspect of it, unlike Speed Grapher which felt out of place in alot of areas which could have shown some worthwhile plot and character development.

I'm afraid I'll have to admit to being yet another person who started watching this but stopped somewhere in the middle and just never managed to get back into it. For some reason all the sex and gore wasn't exactly too compelling. Does the review and the generally positive buzz change my mind? I don't know, but I'll grant you that it might be worth finishing if nothing else.

Why? I'm assuming Zac calls it as he sees it, and even if he wasn't, the number of people who would actually recall what 80's OVA's were like are few and far between.
This is likely stay off my To-Watch list simply because I'm a bit of a prude.
