Wow, 149.98 for 40 episodes of an 18 year old anime. While I'd love to own it, that's just...well, crazy :/

Its sounds reasonable to me, since that is what most anime costs per episode. It being 18 years old doesn't change the fact that they have to gain enough money to pay off expenses for the dub. Since it's 18 years old, it won't sell very much.

I remember back when anime cost that much, it was only 2-3 years ago but feels like forever since it has changed so much since then. Yea thats a little to much compared to other distributors today but I would pay that much if I knew what it was and knew I would really like it. I bought there macross set for about that much and don't regret it.

to the above, since this is animego, I think it is sub only, since thats how macross was released, They even said there freebee disc was subtitled and gave no indication of a dub whatsoever.

Supposedly they'll reduce the price as more people preorder - I've never preordered with them before, so I don't know if that's true, but here's hoping for more preorders!

The retail price of season 1 is $149.98. However, if you preorder the set, you can get it for only $124.98, plus a small shipping charge (depending on what shipping option you select). Furthermore, if we get more than 2000 preorders, we'll automatically reduce the cost to everyone in $5.00 increments (2001-3000 preorders means the price is $119.98, 3001-4000 = $114.98) all the way down to $99.98.

Brings it down to the same price as the recent Blood+ set for a lot more episodes. Pity I live internationally Sad .

Crazy good in my opinion. Although it isn't as amazing as 51 episodes of Remi for $83 this still is a good deal. $150 MSRP usually means only about 20 episodes to me since I tend to not wait for re-releases. I usually don't expect to pay less (which this is on a per episode basis) for older series and in 2004 preferred paying $200 for 50 episodes of Zeta over spending $200 in 2004-5 on 35 episodes of Gundam Seed. I definitely think $150 for Yawara is better than spending $80 on 13 episodes of 1999's To Heart which was released last year.

Is it the price per episode, or the box set only price chunk that is scaring people here? I can understand investing $150 on a series that you have not seen can be intimidating and can be difficult for some here. On the other hand paying $3.75 an episode seems really inviting to me.

I wonder what that price would have been if they offered it up for digital download? For an older series like this a digital download option would be perfect.

Has anyone seen this series and can comment if it is worth the money?

Buy it, it's good!

(from the guy whose fansub group subbed half the series)

This is an excellent series, I highly recommend it.

Yawara is by Naoki Urasawa, the same author as Monster, Master Keaton and 20th Century Boys.

As has already been pointed out the price is also very good.

Question: Is it subtitled and dubbed, or subtitled-only?

Answer: Subtitled-only. There's no possible way we could afford to dub it unless some generous TV network decides they want to put it on the air, and unfortunately, that hasn't happened yet.

Oh well, I was hoping there was going to be a dub version. At $149.98 for 40 episodes and no dub, they can keep this one.

Yay, Yawara! I have been looking forward to this for a long time. I love this series. It is a lot of fun. Animeigo makes great quality sets with lots of useful liner notes. I have their big Macross and Orange Road sets and I love them. I don't care for dubs, so the lack of one doesn't bother me, and I really love older anime. I will have to pick this set up! Very Happy

I'm right there with you; considering I paid more (like, $100) for their release of Macross with one less disc, I'm kind of excited about it as well.

Personally, and this is the AnimEigo fanboy in me coming out, even though AnimEigo's products are usually priced higher, I find the quality of work (especially the recipe cards) make up for the extra cost. In other words, to me, it makes it price-worthy.

I can see this being a big chunk of change for someone not familiar or already liking the series, though. Once it gets released, I suggest renting the first couple of discs and if you've come to like Yawara! as much as I do (partially thanks to Tofu-sensei and the rest of his crew), you'll be willing to shell out for it.

I guess I know where a little bit of next week's paycheck is going...

That's great!

Too bad Animeigo went out of their way to not only screw me on shipping fees for the Macross box set but also to be as curt and unhelpful as possible after the fact, thus setting a clear 'vote with your wallet' precedent that has kept me buying their stuff only when I see it used.

But hey, I'm spiteful.
