To clarify to the ANN readership, the exact wording of the indefinite delay "(i.e., slow), etc." was mine, not Discotek's.
Without putting too fine a point on it, I would say they are primarily concerned about not making back their investment on Lupin releases in general, not necessarily "Babylon." IMHO, that's why "Fuma" got bumped up and "Babylon" pushed back indefinitely: "Fuma" is easily the more "sure bet" between the two. -Reed Nelson LupintheThird.net |

Hm, I've seen Mystery of the Gold of Babylon, and trust me - it being on hold isn't a tragedy. It has its moments, but it's a definite step down from the movie before it (then again, many people would find it impossible to measure up to Castle of Cagliostro) and the director seems to let a lot of it scenes go on for far too long (I didn't need fifteen minutes of Zenigata chasing Lupin on a giant face, thanks).
Still, it would be worth owning on DVD, regardless. There are a lot of older Lupin features I wouldn't mind seeing on DVD (Bye Bye Liberty Crisis, The Hemingway Papers, Napoleon's Dictionary, etc.), but it seems like nobody's doing anything to license them. I guess Lupin doesn't do so well in the U.S. market. |

Gold of Babylon may indeed be unorthodox, but I'd still love to own it-- mainly to convince others (and sometimes myself) that it actually exists and was made. Reed-- I'd heard several times that this movie was directed by Seijun Suzuki, the legendary director behind TOKYO DRIFTER and BRANDED TO KILL. Is this true? I've seen it reported in many reputable sources, but I still find it a little hard to believe.
Incidentally, did Discotek re-dub FUMA, or did they use the Coastal dub produced for the AnimEigo release in 1995? We've only got two Lupin movies that have been dubbed in English more than once, clearly we need more. 8-) |

Hopefully, Discotek will find a way to release it when their schedule allows. Until then, it's probably a good idea for those who'd like it to buy the Fuma Conspiracy.

Yes, but it was actually a co-direction with Shigetsugu Yoshida. Suzuki also contributed the screenplay for the luckiest episode (#13) of "Lupin the Third Part III," the title for which the Lupin Encyclopedia has chosen to translate as "Play a Joke on the Variation." Supposedly, it's one of the more difficult-to-follow stories in Lupindom.... I was hoping they would (and would have certainly been willing to contribute to that cause with my own voice if they'd let me), but "Fuma" is sadly NOT redubbed. It uses the 1995 Coastal/AnimEigo dub of dubious quality. However, the Discotek disc comes with the BGM+SFX-only track from the R2 release, so you could make your own "Fuma" dub if desired! -Reed Nelson LupintheThird.net |

How about a preorder scheme, a certain about of subscriptions and they release it on DVD. I personally wanted to buy several copies of this movie and distribute it between friends.
Will the US never see Pink Jacket Lupin? Gold of Babylon is a great movie despite what other reviews sites (usually biased against older material) seem to think. |

If you can buy online, you can get the Fuma Conspiracy from DeepDiscount's 20% off sale for about $12. Definitely worth the money, it's a wonderfully fun movie that is by far the most Cagliostro-esque of the Lupin III saga aside from, well, Cagliostro.
I've never seen the AnimEigo dub, but I take it that it's a distant seventh place, behind the Manga UK, Funimation, Streamline, Fuse, Manga US, and JAL dubs? ;) |

The reviewers at Anime Academy overvalue Castle of Cagliostro. You can't trust their opinions on Lupin III, unless you're gaga over CoC, which in my opinion, is actually a very poor Lupin III movie, and more of a good Miyazaki movie. Still, in that review of Babylon, there are some decent points. |

I agree it's a great film, think it was the first one I'd seen after Mamo and Cagliostro. I just hate doing the online orgering thing. But looks like I have no choice. *sigh* First Fire Pro Wrestliong now, this. I used to hear about Babylon back in the day, but never really made an effort to see it. Kept having friends tell me it wasn't so hot. Think I'd like to acquire it somehow and do a review finally after what... a decade and a half of hearing about it? LOL Guess it's time... OT: Which company do you think has done the best job dubbing Lupin? I liked Geneon's crew myself. Felt Tony Oliver really nailed the character, but that's just me. |

I've never been tasked to rate all the voice casts on a scale before, so I'll take the opportunity to do it now. 1. Streamline Pictures (Mamo cast - different Goemon) 2. Streamline Pictures (Cagliostro/Part II 145+155 cast) 3. JAL (Mamo; While not really an AWESOME dub, it's great for something recorded in 1978/79, so I hold it high regard) 4. Manga USA (Cagliostro, 2000) 5. Fuse/Phuuz (Part II TV) 6. Manga UK (Goodbye Lady Liberty dub) 7. Funimation (8 TV-Sp's, 2 Movies) 8. Coastal Carolina ("Fuma" - still better than the bad Mamo dubs because it's at least fun to laugh about the terrible line delivery) 9. (tie) Manga UK (Mamo dub - far inferior to their "Liberty" work) 9. No, it doesn't paint the most honest viewpoint, especially with the comment, "Suzuki Seijun may be a famous filmmaker but he is no Miyazaki." To quote Phoenix Wright, "Take that!" Anyway, I'll just say if you like this Babylon fandub, support Fuma. Even if you don't like it, that's just another reason to support Fuma, because it's the complete opposite kind of film. And Discotek has a number of family-friendly anime films you can check out, too. Don't let their remastered prints go to waste.
