I'm just wondering how they can prove you're an otaku.

I think it's because in Japan, the term for Otaku is still a derogatory term. Only someone with extreme confidence or pride in their fanhood would probably admit/acknowledge this!

Also, a big component of Trainman is ridding Densha of his otaku appearance and mannerisms, so it stands to reason that any otaku would be quickly recognized as such before they opened their mouth to announce it.

For some reason, I am amused in a "isn't that cute" kinda way. Interesting.

If tickets were expensive over there, I'd try it to get in cheaper even if I wasn't one.

In terms of Japanese coverage, this has "Slow News Day Story" written all over it. Rolling Eyes

In American News ideology, this would definitely be a final story on a Friday 6PM or 10/11PM news.

I hear that tickets run about $15 over there, not sure what that is in yen. The other posters are right, it would be at least mildly shameful to admit "I'm an otaku" to get a discount. Of course, if they did that for a Star Wars movie over here, plenty of people really would lie just to get the discount.

What I got from the article is that all you have to do is admit your an otaku, which a lot of people are not really willing to come out and say. The idea being that even non-otaku can get the discount, but they still have to point them selfs out as one.

The pressure to conform there is much stronger than it is here (if you can believe that) and thus admitting basically "I'm a weird loser" is not something that everyone would do for $3.60. Over here, we've managed to turn nerds and other geeks into a life style choice, and thus we have much less problems identifying as such. It's not necessarily so in japan.
