Just finished reading the spinoff to Mai Hime, Mai Otome yesterday. In all due honesty, I liked this series more than Mai Hime. The ending in the other series was kind of dull, but this series' ending seemed to have a bit of closure in certain aspects. Characters' paths were set, you could say.
One thing that was enjoyable about this series was the characters. A lot more bright, kawaii, and more fun to read about. Characters certainly had their darksides, or hidden demons, but to me these seemed to be confronted in a better way than those in Mai Hime.
The fanservice also was something else. Sure, there were t*** in both series, but that's not the point I want to make. The girls were cute, we got to see pantyshots, but where else could you have virgin warriors who are pretty hot looking and at the same time get to kick some serious ass. That is what I call fanservice. And believe me, I have not seen too many series that have virgins doing what they do in Mai Otome. Kudos to the series.
To truly understand the outcome of the series though, however much I hate to say it, you must read Mai Hime to have a full understanding of the events that lead up to the finale. Other than that, everything is A okay with this series, and I give it a Very Good rating.

Fighter,
I know you read Japanese, so is this Japanese manga that you're reading? Because I don't remember seeing this on TRSI...

In fact it is. Unfortunately this series is not licensed over here, but Tokyopop has Mai Hime. I'm not surprised that Rightstuf wouldn't have it. At AX last year I asked Shawn Kleckner myself if the site would carry Japanese language manga at all, to which the answer was no.

I have the Mai-Hime manga. I saw an interesting person at the end of that series. A rather pleasant surprise that made me laugh.
Well, now I have M-O to look forward to.
