We all know that anime is edited on television so they can fit it into 30 min time slots with annoying commercails in between....What's your opinion on editing anime for television?

Well, in my opinion, it is annoying, but if the story is not affected in any way, well then, fine by me.

Basically, as long as it's necessary for anime to gain greater exposure, and as long as it doesn't go too far (a la Card Captor Sakura, Tenkuu no Escaflowne), I have no problem with it. A snip here & there for nationwide television exposure? Sure, go for it. I mean, if editing can be avoided, then by all means avoid it (FLCL, Big O, Witch Hunter Robin). But if a minor time cut or content alteration is needed that doesn't jeopardise the story or characters, I don't see the big deal.

I really don't like anime on television to be edited, but as long as the story isn't ruined, then I don't mind. Mostly, just the opening and ending are shortened. Like Rurouni Kenshin's ending, HeartOfSword was only like 30 seconds long from its original 1 minute and 40 seconds. Some of the show is cut as well.

Personally, I don't see why he's getting all up in a huff about a two-second pan being reduced to a one-second pan or whatever. TechTV needs the advertising dollars, it's understandable, if not a little bit of a pain. 'Sides, I like seeing the real opening animation and not some crappy dancing silhouette waste of time like Cartoon Network does for Adult Swim.
In short, I don't mind it. It'd be nice if they didn't have to cut in for so many commercials, but it's not like they're removing any vital or irreplacable bits of information. At least it's not going all-out with the editing scissors like Rurouni Kenshin on Toonami (where fights were so hacked apart you could barely tell what was going on half the time and the main villain's death was cut completely). |

I agree in that Tech TV has too many commercials. I don't mind if they edit where they need to, so long as they don't cut major pieces of the story out. I also don't see how Adult Swim has to cut out every OP but somehow has enough time to leave the Bebop OP in. |

I agree very much with Nagisa here. Basically everything I wanted to say has already been said by Nagisa. |

On broadcast and basic cable, anime should not be edited unless for a vaild reason (like removing a brest scene before the 11pm watershed, I'm talking about the US mind you.)

I just look at it from the cold, business perspective: As long as the licensor approves, any type of edits are fair game. Assuming the content of a children's programme is not too outrageous for easily-offended parents, who, if you're talking about syndication, are a lot more important to the kiddy TV syndicator than the anime purist niche, if a buck can be made editing a show for the kiddies, it will be made, and the best the niche who are aware of the changes made can hope for is a separate, uncut release.

Editing basically is one of those things that have to be there because some parents may be too picky as to what they want their kids to see.
I don't care if they do or don't because I always end up buying those titles on DVD anyway. ![]() |

Here's what I think.
Adult Swim...sorry, ADULT SWIM!!! People shouldn't let their kids watch it if they don't think they should. CN should be able to play the stuff uncut if they want. Of course it does have a lot to do with advertisements. But, I think that parents should take responsibility, and stop trying to get the TV channels/advertisers to watch out for their children. |

This is an Age old question/Topic, but still gathers interest. Although it's rather easy for me to dismiss and rebuke the idea of edited Anime, (I rent and buy DVDs as well as subscribe to the Anime Network.) At the same token it gives those who may not own a DVD player or subcribe to Premium Cable channels a chance to watch Anime broadcasts from Tech TV or the Cartoon Network.
I understand that the aforementioned networks have to remove some of the content ,in order to make space for sponsers. (who in fact are paying for the shows.) And for those who feel that too many scenes have been omitted/deleted, well the solution would be to purchase the DVDs (uncut and uncensored.) Let's put this in a better perspective; If Tech TV and AS aired Anime uncut and without commercials, would the majority of people go out and buy the DVDs when they can record the shows (Via VCR or DVD recorder) and save $$$$? And if so, how will the licensing companies get paid from lack of DVD purchases? do you know where i'm getting at? |

CN cuts openings because they don't like them, not because of time. |

I can't speak for anyone else, but I would go out and buy the dvds. Just like if there are fansubs I like I still go out and buy the dvds eventually. Besides, being cut or uncut, with commericals or not has no bearing to me personally on if I go out and buy a dvd. If I was cheap enough to not want to spend the money, then I would just record the cut versions and be happy with that. Maybe that's why I'm broke all the time ![]()
So that means that they "don't like" any anime OPs except for Cowboy Bebop? Last edited by Kazuki-san on Mon Jun 07, 2004 2:59 pm; edited 1 time in total |
