From my point of view, harem is not something like vampires, mecha, or zombies. Harem is a description of a kind of anime/manga that has usually one guy with multiple girls falling in love with him. To me, that sounds like a genre. But animenewsnetwork has it listed as a theme. Can someone explain to me why? Thank you in advance.

All harem style shows are merely forms of romance anime. The genre or type of these anime are romance, and they use harem, multiple girls 1 guy, as the subject or central topic of the romance story being told. The shows can even have multiple genres, romance & comedy, romance & drama, romance & erotica, and any number of other combinations with romance, but in the end they are all just harem themed shows within the genre.
Harem really is just like vampires or mecha as themes because they are the subjects within their respective genres. You could have a show where 8 lady vampires are all in love with 1 male vampire and they all pilot mecha to fight zombies, and harem, vampire, mecha, and zombie would all be themes of the show that would fall under the romance, supernatural, action, possibly horror, and who knows what other, genres.
Or something like that... maybe someone else will come along and explain it better.

I don't know about you, but that kind of premise sounds awesome.
At any rate, I thought Harem was a genre. I guess it must be a sub-genre of romance, just like how Super Robots and Real Robots are sub-genrees of Mecha anime.
But hey, what do I know? I haven't seen that many harem animes yet(I mostly do a little research on what to watch and what NOT to watch).

Same here.
I don't think harem doesn't stand out enough to be considered it's own genre because it's just a single aspect of anime and come in many forms, either drama, comedy, romance, action-adventure, sci-fi/fantasty, hentai, etc. or a combination of genres. The possibilities are endless.

I don't think harem can even really be considered a sub-genre. It can be a central theme withing the story, but it is still a theme. A sub-genre would be more like something that falls directly under the genre umbrella.
I'm still having a hard time thinking about how to put it... How about.. An anime is a romance and it tells the story with the use of a harem style plot. So harem is the theme of the romantic anime. It could have been love triangle, or forbidden love or gay romance, but in this case it is harem. It would still have been a romantic show with any of those themes, but all of the themes are merely ways of telling a romantic story.
A Genre is sort of what a show is, a theme is something that a show uses to tell the story.
Bah, I'm probably confusing people, or myself more... I'll shut up about it.

I can see it now, you get a big salad bowl and you toss in some Love Hina, Hellsing, Gungrave, and Eureka 7; I suppose I'd have to watch at least an episode just out of curiosity.

I thought of Madame Marciano's Twelve Sisters from Coyote Ragtime Show. They're already Gothic Lolitas, and with a bit of tweaking the character types would fit nicely...

ok, thanks. that somewhat helped. all i understood was that harem is not enough of a genre to be a genre, and thus "drops down" to being a theme. right now, i don't feel like arguing about this, so i'm going to leave it as is.
