I was just wondering, along the same lines as this week's 1st Answerman question: what do you wish would be licensed in the US, and why do you think it would be successful?

I'll start by agreeing w/the person who wrote the letter. Both Flame of Recca and Kodocha are great anime series. I can kind of understand how an anime company in the US might balk at Kodocha's length, but that doesn't explain Flame of Recca. I got numerous newbie anime likers to turn into full-fledged otaku, just lending them my Flame of Recca. It's my husband's favorite series. It's very, very appealing. And I could certainly use some DVDs of it with, erm, better translations, shall we say.
I had been wondering about DNA^2 for a while, but that one's finally been bought, thank goodness.
Other animes I'd like to see commercially available in the US include: Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne, Fruits Basket, and Hana Yori Dango. (Can you tell I'm a shoujo fan?) KKJ starts out pretty silly, and I couldn't help but roll my eyes every time they mentioned Joan of Arc. But that one really hooks you. Fruits Basket is one of those animes without much conflict. It's really character-driven. The main character is just so sweet and lovable, though, that it's hard not to like this series. Hana Yori Dango is one of the more violent and realistic shoujo series I've seen. It explores such themes as jealousy, cross-class romance, violence in schools, and individuality. And really, where else will you find a series where a guy falls for a girl because she drop-kicked him and declared war on him?

Hmm... how prescient of me. Fruits Basket HAS been bought up, and is being released soon. That'll teach me to check all my sources before I post.

But everyone should go get it when it does come out (late October). I understand it's from the same company that handled Kodocha. I haven't seen it all the way, thru, tho, so I can't comment on the WHOLE series - only up to episode 18. And up to ep 18, it's great and funny and....
I'll quit babbling to cover up now....

I think the first volume comes out October 29th with 6 episodes on it. It doesn't seem like a title FUNimation would license. According to Right Stuf the DVD is gonna cost $39.95!?

Fruits Basket: Definitely an interesting choice for Funimation. The above-average price is because the whole 26 episode series is coming out on 4 discs (Which does make the series, as a whole, cheaper than almost all brand-new releases). It's connected to Kodocha through Daichi (Director of both, as well as Jubei-chan, Elf/Fairy Princess Raine, Now and Then, Here and There, Tsukikage Ran (Carried by the wind), and a bunch of other stuff). I'm waiting eagerly.

I'm betting the success of Marmalade Boy will determine whether or not we see Hana Yori Dango in the US. Both have a similar idea to them, and would probably share an audience. Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne and other magical girl shows are probably slim chances now, given the way St. Tail bombed. But, still, any shoujo in the US is good shoujo.

I would love to see Touch get liscensed, but it's an older series and probably has about as much chance of getting liscensed and released here as a snowball surviving a really hot place. It's a shame too. A truly great story.

Yeah, it gets really dumb later on, but I'd love to see someone have the balls to license One Piece for a proper, subtitled release. The show is goofy but it's so much fun to watch it's criminal.
