I've been wondering for a while now...just how many anime are based on actual novels, or likewise how many novels are based on anime? I don't mean graphic novels here, but actual text-only, non-illustrated, multi-chapter books. I know Mobile Suit Gundam and Crest/Banner of the Stars are based on books, Boogiepop Phantom & Full Metal Panic! somehow have a book tie-in, and I TIHNK Read or Die & Blood: The Last Vampire are connected to books in some fashion, but are there any others?

Vampire Hunter D was originally a novel.

I believe Howl's Moving Castle is based on a novel. The anime's not done yet, but...

Edited for clarification.

Oh, something else I forgot to add...how many of said novels are available in North America, or are at least translated online?

I don't think any of the above novels have been translated. Although I did hear a rumor about Bandai Translating the Crest of the Stars Novels. I don't know how true it is, but I can hope.

I think I heard something about Gundam being translated a while ago, and supposedly being re-translated and re-released at some point in the near future.

Kiki's Delivery service is based on a book by Eiko Kadono, and is available in the states.

Some other anime of the top of my head:

Starship Troopers
Little Women
The Little Prince
Saiyuki
Romance of the Three Kingdoms
Sherlock Holmes (sort of...)

All of these books are available state's side

It's actually a pretty good booke and the author, Diana Wynne Jones, is fairly well known. It also has a sequel called Castle in the Air.

Amazon.com shows some listings for crest of the stars as future releases, but not sure if it is the original novel or a manga of the series.

Some anime based on novels, aside from what's already been said, are Rahxephon, Scrapped Princess, Record of Lodoss War, Mirage of Blaze, Juuni Kokki, Fushigi Yuugi Eikoden, Legend of Galactic Heroes and Ai no Kusabi. Slayers was novel-based too, if I'm not mistaken.

Plus you got your anime based from RPG's, dating sims, fighting games, and some are original.

Don't forget Battle Royale! Not an anime but it spawned the manga and the live action movie.

As far as fan-translations...

Crest of the Stars 1 (and maybe others?) had been translated by a fan who was trying to sell his translation to various companies. In the meantime, he's selling copies of the book (at-cost) with his translation included free. You can probably find it by googling with the appropriate terms.

Record of Lodoss War is being translated by myself. I'm about 70 pages into the first novel, which is where I left off in September.. I should probably do a few pages while I've still got time during this break. It won't be finished before December 2004, unless I somehow find a LOT of time this year... which I doubt. The Lodoss novels were based off of a Pen-and-Paper RPG system. I don't think that the system is directly compatible with D&D, but given that it was made in the mid-80s, it probably wouldn't be too hard to write conversion rules.

Peter Payne (now of J-List) did translations of the Shin KOR novels back in 1995.

But, generally, novels are really hard to do as fan-translations, because of the sheer amount of text. Every page for 250-300 pages is -text-.. and a lot of that text isn't merely spoken text, but descriptive text, which adds its own problems (metaphor, simile, etc...) that don't normally arise when spoken.

I think the Gundam novels were released back here in the early 90s, and covered the 0079 storyline.

The Boogiepop Phantom novels haven't been officially licenced for translation, but a few partial fan translations exist.

Also, there is a website with general summaries for the novels. http://mostlycloudy.net/~ballzapalooza/boogiepop/books.htm.ja.euc

Of all the novels related to anime, the Boogiepop series are what I'd love to read the most... Anime cry
