Vertical publishing has made me one of the happiest people ever. I love To Terra..., Buddha, Ode to Kirihito, and all the wonderful classics, especially Tezuka classics that are getting the reprint or finally printed treatment from them. I never got to read the only 2 volumes of Black Jack that Viz put out forever ago anyway, so not I'm absolutely ecstatic that this classic series is finally making it's way back to our shelves. Anyone else? |

I also must thank Vertical for the stunning Apollo's Song and Ode To Kirihito. You can bet your life I'm going to be picking up Black Jack now. I hope they're either hardback or those fat doorblock-sized volumes they did his other works in. And maybe a good ol' Chip Kidd cover to boot...
Also, has anyone read the other Tezuka Vertical-published piece, MW? It sound really strange... |

Yeah I got to give Vertical a hands up for releasing some classics. I can't wait for Black Jack. I've read Ode to Kirihito, Apollo's Song, and started MW. I need to pick up Buddha. I've also picked up their Keiko Takemiya stuff, which is also great. I can't wait to see more stuff from them.

Nope, too late. They switch on Thursdays. Now it's Tokyopop. |

I've been wanting to read MW, but money's tight right now.
![]() Ah yes, and I forgot about Andromeda Stories. Another Keiko Takemiya great. I really enjoyed it and can't wait for the next one. Let's hope for more wonderful work from the 49ers. Vertical needs to keep it up. Although, I am a little sad that we'll have to wait about a year for the first volume of Black Jack. The article says Fall 2008.... ![]() |

If you'd still like a teaser, Vertical have the first whole chapter up.
And I luckily had a sneaky read of an exclusive snippet from it in Anime Insider... |

I'm not too far into MW but it seems to be a step up from Apollo's Song (which was more or less a lecture about sex and love wrapped up in experimental storytelling). Similar tone to Kirihito, only even darker and more depraved. If its compelling enough I'll make a thread after I finish it.
While I enjoy reading Tezuka's lesser-known works like Dororo or MW, I'd take Black Jack over just about anything else in his catalog. A new edition of Adolf would also be nice to have; considering its marketability to the "New Yorker" comic book fan and the more manageable length I'm surprised they didn't go for that over BJ (licensing complications?). But since I've already read Adolf I'm more than happy with their choice. |

I might be branded a heretic, but outside of Buddha, Ode to Kirihito, and MW Vertical hasn't been that consistent with their quality. Apollo's Song is one of Tezuka's weaker stories that I've read, To Terra... is very readable but offers absolutely nothing new (though the art is quite nice), and Andromeda Stories is an absolute mess.
The first three titles make up for it, though, and re-licensing Black Jack makes 'em heroes. |
