I was just thinking about my first experiences with anime, and why I started to collect it. My first experiences, about 14-15 years ago was with the original voltron; and even Nickolodeon aired a few anime related shows: "Grimm's Fairy Tale Adventures", "The Little Prince", and some show about a young girl with a magic koala bear(can't remember the name of it...)

I can remember the first anime movies I saw were "Fist of the North Star" and "Vampire Hunter D" about eleven years ago. It completely blew my mind because I had never seen any animation so vivid and detailed like that before. I knew, at that point, that anime was something that I wanted to be involved with.

I just wanted to know what series/movies started you all on your paths of collecting anime?

Pokemon. Everyone was doing it.

Then I started watching Dragonball (NOT Z) and Tenchi on Toonami. Then I was introduced to Adult Swim by my cousin where I found Outlaw Star, Mobile Suit Gundam, and Cowboy Bebop. I never looked back.

I began watching the Toonami stuff back when it first debuted on CN. But I think the movies that REALLY got me interested into the whole anime deal were Ninja Scroll, Akira, Ghost in the Shell, and Vampire Hunter D. The first series I saw other than what was being broadcasted on CN was Evangelion. I also got hooked on Blue Seed when it was first shown on the Action Channel. I have TV to thank mostly. Anime smile

Dragonball Z. Me and my friend had recently left our karate school because of stupid high school. So it was a way for us to appreciate the raw beauty of fighting.

Ahh, bullsh!t, I just wanted a tail and to fly. Razz

First I disliked anime because of Pokemon and those Pokemon like shows. I thought all anime was like Pokemon, I was wrong.
I started to like anime when I first Sailor Moon and Gundam Wing. Then I became a big fan by seeing Tenchi, Outlaw Star, Zoids (not Zero), Big O, and Dragonball (not Z). Then came Adult Swim and Anime Unleashed, and I became a bigger anime fan. And I can't forget about Kenshin and .hack.

OK
the first anime I saw interested me enough to reasearch more about them. Then I found out that my little cartoons came from Japan. I am talking about shows like: Yattaman, Daimos, The Calendar Kingdom (italian title), Tiger Mask. They came to Poland from Italy. I watched them when I was 11 y.
But what really brought me into the anime world was Dragon Ball. About 5 years ago. As a kid I really liked it.

Actually, the movie that started me down the road to appreciating anime wasn't an anime at all, or is depending on who you talk to (there is some debate over it). When I was about 5 or 6, my mom showed me for the first time "The Last Unicorn", one of her all time favorite movies. Even though I was so young, I could definitely tell that it was more serious and that there was more going on than what was happening in the Disney movies I went to see in the theater with my Grandma.

I was hooked on serious animation from that point on. Not too long after, I saw Project A-ko over my best friend's house and the rest is history.

Noozles.

Yeah. I was a child of the 80s, and grew up watching the exact same sorta stuff. It wasn't so much that I enjoyed _anime_, but that I enjoyed (and still enjoy) _animation_.. and the 80s/early 90s provided PLENTY of animation.

how sad is it that about 4 months ago I bought some Noozles tapes Wink

EDIT: duh, should've answered the question. I have always loved animation but it was Escaflowne on FoxKids that made me go out and look for anime since they never showed the end of it

What made me realize that this anime thing was really cool was The Record of Lodoss War OVA series. What made me go "WOW, so this is what anime is capable of", was when I saw Escaflowne

My best friend had been trying to get me into anime for years and was semi successful. I liked what he showed me but had no desire to seek out anything on my own.

Having already seen Princess Mononoke, I picked up Spirited away on DVD last December while on a trip to France. I remember thinking that if I didn't like it I could always use it as a gift for my friend (which he'd appreciate as he's into Anime and from France). It inspired me too seek out more anime, so my friend suggested Cowboy Bebop. I brought the first few DVDs from American importers but were too expensive so I stopped.

I picked up some more anime during a trip to LA. (wanting to spend my money on something, aniime seemed good enough.) Picking up amonst other things The Neon Genesis box set, I began watching them when I got home. About half way through the show, I became really impressed, and for two months I was trying to get my hands on as much anime as I could. (Downloading eps of shows from the net and buying the ones I really liked if available.)

It was more persistence from my friend and my desire to spend all my holiday money on something I could keep as well as just beer that got me into anime, but I think Neon Genesis cracked it. Since then it's just been a growing avalanche of shows wanting me to get more shows. It slowed down a bit because of work but picking up again now.

You know, when i was really young (i mean **REALLY** young) i watched the Noozles. But i just saw it as any other cartoon. I had no idea what anime was at that time. Actually i'm scared that i can remember that. But then again, as a young boy, i watched just about anything, some of them (like my little pony) i am truely ashamed and embarassed about. How could my parents let me watch these shows? Oh well, guess there's really no harm in it since i turned out to be a pretty normal person.

But what really made me get into anime and realize more about what anime really is, was DBZ. But what made me want to start owning the anime was Trigun.

I think what started me on anime was Pokemon. I was interested in the show, so I would go on the internet to find out more about it. Digimon came later, and I became more and more interested in anime. Then, when I discovered Toonami, I watched GW, Dragonball Z, and others like Outlaw Star and Gundam 0079 on TV, when they got into the block. I gradually learned about manga, so I started buying those and what really made me want to buy anime was Lain.
