I bought the first volume of The Vision of Escaflowne last week. While I never saw the series, I did see a skit of it in AMV Hell 3, and I know what the characters look like (just not their names...except for Merle). However, the girl in the manga looks way different than the girl in the anime; is the story different, or overall the same?
(then again, not like I'll know) Also: Does Merle show up  ?

Merle doesn't show up. A couple names are the same, but other than that its way different.

I saw the whole anime series, but I couldn't tell you much about the manga, since I only skimmed through like, 1 volume of the manga. All I could tell was that the characters did indeed look WAY different (Hitomi is one of those geeky girls with glasses instead of the short-haired jock, WTF!?) and I was able to notice a few story points that were a little out of place.

All the Escaflowne manga (and I know there are at least two series out there and there may be more) are not based off the anime series or the movie. IIRC, they are based off story ideas that were floating around when they came up with the anime originally. Many of these story ideas obviously didn't make the final cut for the anime, but have been used in the manga to tell a very different story that really should be taken more as a stand-alone than as anything really connected to the anime series (which is the same case as there is between the series and the movie: they are two completely different stories that have some characters in common, though even though characters are often very different).

Like marie-antoinette stated, they're based off the idea, sort of like how Utena got a manga completely different from the show even though the manga came later.
And also like marie-antoinette stated, there are two different manga. One's for the boys (which is what I think we got here) with all the mech battles and stuff, and another is for girls (Escaflowne - Energist's Memories) and is based more on the romantic aspect of the story with less mech battles. I think Hitomi looked like tv Hitomi in the shoujo one. |

As far as I can tell, the Escaflowne creation cycle went something sort of like this:
Concept is discussed. Shonen manga is started, based on those discussions. Character designs for the TV anime come about, story is finalized further. Shojo manga is started. TV anime is released. Movie is released several years later, with a revamped storyline and modified character designs. So the character designs (and in some respects the storyline) of the two-volume shojo manga are much closer to those used in the television series than the designs and storyline used for the shonen manga. Sadly, only the shonen manga made it to the US, and I'm not really a fan of the direction that particular iteration of the story took. ~Shadrach Anki |

I've read part of the shojo manga. While Allen wearing clothing reminiscent of Sephiroth really makes him look hot, the manga seems kind of fluffy, predictable and the artwork isn't really detailed. More for the romancophiles I guess.
Haven't read the shounen manga though. It's like 8 volumes right? One of the things (out of many cuse it's such a great series) I liked about the anime was how it blended so well the action with the romance and character development and also that your typical prince charming can have flings hehehe... It's an anime every serious anime fan should see. The movie is good (gotta dig the emo/Mad Max esque Allen look), though sadly the secondary characters get so little screening time. It's still a very good movie if you accept you won't see much of that Allen in action.  Oh, and Folken looks horrid in the movie. What did they do to him??!!! *cries in a corner*

They put him into a storyboard artist's version of a blender and whisked him into a good, creamy syrup.  Anyways, I find it really odd that the anime has the guys dressed to kill (read: puffy sleeves, a little red shirt that barely covers the torso) while the movie has them all covered up. Is it winter in Gaia?
BTW, I didn't know about the shojo/shounen bifurcation. So what we've been seeing is the shounen version? (Not that I'd miss the shojo version!) |

There are three versions.
The shonen one, which is the one you have, which was release by Tokyopop and is the only one out in the US. A shojo one And a compliation of different short stories from various artists. About what you mentioned with Hitomi looking different, that is actually what she was going going to be like in the series (glasses, lng hair, and more feminine). When they were first planning the series, they gave the go ahead for the manga series, but then the anime was dropped. It was almost not made at all, until Sunrise decided to rethink it 2 years later, and the new director (Kazuki Akane) wanted to add shojo elements and make Hitomi a more intelligent, independent girl. So...basically, the shonen manga is a glimpse of what might have been, at least visually. |
