The Smithsonian Freer Gallery, and Satoshi "in person" to be exact. Saturday April 14th 4pm ("Tokyo Godfathers"), and 7pm ("Paprika" with Q&A!) showings, BOTH with introductions from the Man himself.
I made it there from Jersey (and home alive in that WEATHER!), but would like to chat with any among the max. 250 (seating) people there.
-Tough making it into "Paprika", but the great audience made it worth Kon's 14hr. flight, for sure!
He really, warmly embraced them -even breaking outside his contract to do some quick signings!
GREAT translator, and organizing/handling of everything. Oh yeah, the new film was too! (I believe the N.Y. Film festival last Oct. had the actual U.S. premiere, no?)
It goes "limited release" in June.
Sure beated Otomo's "no-show" at The Director's Guild of America's, (N.Y. city) March '05 premiere of "Steamboy"...
-No free swag like there, but a HUGE success!!
Look forward to hearin' ya voices on the whole event!
(will be back after watching Gonzo's "Origin")
Only caught Oshii's, "The Amazing Lives of Fast Food Grifters"? =Welome!
Thanks.

*Origins=A NICE early full-length effort from Gonzo -gotta watch out for that director!*
No spoilers:
"Paprika" (put some on my chicken breast today), is a roller-coaster ride of a film, that retains a familiar "contemporary" setting, but delves into facets of peoples' psyches through their dreams -exposing their weaknesses and imperfections, desires etc., all brought to shocking reality by Madhouse. Not a fantasy or sci-fi anime, it has more in common with elements developed in the "Paranoia Agent" series.
With entertainingly twisted results, Satoshi Kon is in his element for all of it's 91 minutes.
*goes reads reviews*
Hope you had/get a chance to witness this outlandishly clever hit!

Basically, this turn out was so great (BIG standing-O's!) for Satoshi Kon (and he mentioned the N.Y. one he was at was too), that you KNOW you can expect him for his future films in the U.S.. So many people of so many ages & races were there, it was satisfying -and rewarding for the great director.
Sorry no one here made it. The weather certainly was intimidating. (perhaps one could share another Kon appearance-experience?)
Thanks anyway!
See ya around.

I ended up going to the Tokyo Godfathers showing. There was quite a large and diverse crowd; it kind of shocked me. But then again this was my first anime related event. The movie was pretty good and, it kept the audience cracking up.
I almost made the Paprika, if only they had 3 more tickets . By the time I got out of Tokyo Godfathers the line for Paprika had already formed and was kind of long. All and all it was a good experience despite the weather.
Oh, you have a typo; you spelled Freer with a G.

WOW! Some here DID actually make it!
I am so happy for ya two, really.
Yes, Song_Bird, the crowd was tough. This was only my 2nd anime event. The ONLY way I nabbed tickets for "Paprika", was by skipping out on "Tokyo Godfathers" (someone called it "Grandfathers" lol!) just :30 min. into it! (of course I own it so...) Doing that was hard, 'cause like you said, there was a great crowd that made it fun -but they were quite the giggly sort. (made the film seem more light-hearted than it actually was)
But I HAD to do it, my 4+ hours of driving had to amount to getting the full measure of offerings of anime and Kon at the "marathon"! (my girlfriend got to stay and enjoy it though)
At that point the line was half as long as when you later encountered it. Boy oh boy... sorry ya missed it: SO CLOSE! But I do know how it is. TOO MUCH PEOPLE=COMPETITION! Hopefully you'll catch "Paprika" this summer and make up for it.
Btw: Thanks for the typo-tipo! I kept thinking of "Greer" as in: "David Allen"! (1 MILLIONLOLER$!!!)
Viga_of_stars (love that celestial-ness!): Thank you for sharing that, very candidly human, and comedic experience! (Attendees' view of the event is what I hoped to get here)
That stuff happens, but really funny! Doesn't matter: YA MET THE KON!! YOU DID GREAT!
Excellent questions were fielded there, and I'm sure yours were especially appreciated -CONGRATS!
Um, *cough*...
Would you care to mention the question in particular, and what you recall as to Satoshi's answer?
We'd all LOVE it!
BUT: Next time remember when you attend an event having celebrities or distinguished guests of honor, to be mentally prepared somehow -that you could end up meeting someone of stature or being in their presence (and the presence of media too).
For example:
I attended the Garden State Film Festival (where I live) last month, and at the opening night premiere, I excitedly asked some Q's of the director's film afterwards. Next thingI know there's a camera-man, lights, microphone and what amounted to an "interview". Goodness!! Ya never know WHAT you can get yourself into at such events! (they were good Q's=WHEW!) The next morning, I met him again casually, as we were both attending films -and we could talk relaxed.
BE PREPARED for that when appearing at such functions.
Thank you both for noticing little ol' me's thread!
I would too LOVE to meetcha at another one somehow.
Take care.

Wow. I got an interveiw at katsucon on the random once.
My question was what was his work like before he started directing.
He answered by talking about his manga work and said a quote i wont forget.
"to be a great manga artist you must be able to tell a story" long those lines. It got me jumped and pumped! I still wish i got his autograph on my sketchbook!
For now on at cons and events..im gonna have a special autograph sketchbook for japanese and american artists to sign the cover! yes!
I will take your advice on mental preparedness to heart!......Daaaa!
EDIT: Consider me one of you anime friends!

Sorry so late:
What a fantastic question there! (Really appreciate ya gettin' back here) Yeah, where the heck DID Satoshi Kon come from -like his background work experience and such?! Because in '97, he just dropped like a grand piano from the Tokyo Tower, and...
that's why so many were there in D.C..
I guess he came up into anime, how I would consider "traditional", (manga first -then tv... to feature anime?) or an "old-school" rise to fame. But I need to get "schooled" more on the industry there myself!
A nice answer too, but what he NEXT said, that you quoted -was that ADVICE from the MAN himself? From the teller of multifaceted realities, and their coincidentally-intertwined dreams?
And it was given to YOU.
=GOLDEN.
A gift.
How I appreciate you capturing the tremendous encouragement and motivation instilled in you by that moment, and releasing such inspired energy it has become -HERE on my curious thread!
Thank you.
May it be felt by those perusing, as it did me, while causing me to reflect on my love of drawing from it's undeveloped past...
*cries at thought of having sold his drawing table*
No, Satoshi's signature is there, in your sketchbook -by the very way your craft exudes his influence. (no matter if it's Honda's trademark chara. design, it's how Kon uses those images, right?) He's already left it there inside you. Don't worry about that.
-But THAT, of course, doesn't mean you can leave your "signable" sketchbook idea home next time!
May you have success in your endeavors there.
There's nothing more timeless, and enduringly etched into human history than the stories from the great story-tellers themseles.
Life brings with it so many tales & experiences that MUST be told. Yes Kon's statement, though in a manga context, rings true any way you see fit.
Thanks for that treat!
(btw:I showed my folks "Millennium Actress" this past weekend, so they could see why I went)
You certainly motivate me as well (and a certain "Khan" I met while there) to finally attend an anime-con. (Kon/cons are out of CONTROL!!) New York is resurrecting it's short lived series, at the same place next year.
With such sweet offerings of friendship from you in that mutual interest, how could I not?
Sounds great. Yours is quite whole-heartedly accepted -and considered the very first here!
(if my long-windedness doesn't scare ye)
-Hey: anything you care to describe about Katsucon in general (educate me), or of that experience too if you wish?
(in brief)
Finally:
Nice of ya to take my vague advice as well. It is not well experienced in that exact regard, but some is drawn from exp. in public speaking, believe it or not -especially TEACHING/instructing, asking of questions etc. Interviewing methods & skills are a part of that area. (didn't study into that lol, obviously!)
TanX for yer time.
Have a beautiful spring, wherever/whenever it may be.
Mike
(mykelti="silent friend" in Black Feet Indian)
*won't forget the "Dddaaaa" incident! -Real life humor there! (like in an anime-drama, Miyazaki style!)*

Yeah, I was going to go to this out, but unfortunately we had to leave DC that day at around noon. The pamphlet I got did mention the showing though, along with some no-name J-pop group which I wanted to watch but was also unable to.
