Only thing that comes to mind would be Bubblegum Crisis, Armitage, Megazone 23...all I can think of at moment.

There's also the Ghost In The Shell movie.
EDIT: Blah, I really should have woken up before posting this morning.

I believe he mentioned GITS and SAC.
Im not sure how MD Geist and Fist of the North Star fit in. Those seems more like post apocalypse wasteland, kinda like Mad Max meets Street fighter anime.
Lain I could see, forgot that one.
Akira doesnt seem very cyberpunk to me but then its been several years since I have seen it. Akira seemed more like a psycho/scifi/thriller to me with metaphysical aspects thrown in for spice.

1-You were right about Lain ve seen it and I wonder why would one call it cyberpunk.
2-Akira is a real cyberpunk movie. I only forgot to put its name in my list. But you described it a good as possible "psycho/scifi/thriller with metaphysical aspects thrown in for spice." that's a phrase I would like to use when one asks me about
Akira
I'll take your advice on Bubblegum Crisis and Armitage. Thanks for your guidance (By the way does this Armitage has any thing to do with the Neuromancer's Armitage?)

I really really think Production I.G should get William Gibson and make an anime with him. either one of his books or short stories or a whole knew one.

Bubble Gum Crisis is as hardcore Cyberpunk as anime gets, IMO.
The original 8 episode series is decent, but there was a very, very steep improvement to the plot for the newer B.C. Tokyo 2040 series, and it's a full 26 Episodes.
I'd recommend both, but if you're really just looking for a fully fleshed out series, go with 2040, Original is kind of for nostalgia's sake.

Bubblegum Crisis is cyberpunk, but there's also this problem where it sucks real bad. The newer series, 2040, is far less stupid and actually watchable. Avoid the AD Police series also.
lain is also good. Akira moreso. And Fist of the Northstar may be totally awesome in my eyes, but no way is it cyberpunk, man. Just because something has a dystopian future doesn't make it cyberpunk.

Is Metropolis "cyberpunk" or is it "steampunk"?

Metropolis is Cyberpunk. Steampunk is basically 1800s era technology powering artifacts that aren't even possible by today's standards (See Sakura Taisen for reference). Metropolis takes place in the future and is definetely cyberpunk; it's a dystopian society, with crumbling remnants of technology around it.

Hmmm... since we mentioned BGC, what about AD POLICE? Burn Up W and Excess might also be cyberpunk. If you're into fighters as well, try Gowcaizer... it's done by Masami Oobari, but it's fun and looks an awful lot like BGC.
Read or Die might've been if only it were more mecha-induced, but its still a close second to that category I think.
