encyclopedia: anime#12157

Synopsis: The story revolves around a high school freshman living on his own for the first time. When he arrives at his new apartment, however, he finds someone already there: a man who claims to be an alien with a case of amnesia

I had reasonably solid standards for this series, given that Togashi was behind the manga, but it was better than I thought it would be, since I'm only used to him doing battle manga. The relationship dynamic between the two leads is pretty interesting and makes for some good laughs. It also looks like it has the potential to be a pretty solid sci-fi drama, which I hear it's better known for.

One thing though. It may just have been me not paying attention, but did the alien have name(other than the "true form" thing)?

I went in not knowing much about the series and was pleasantly surprised. I really liked it. I liked the dynamic between the alien and Yukitaka; it lead to some honestly funny moments. (The puppet one being my favorite.) The balance between the comedy and drama elements felt fair enough, though I was expecting the item spoiler[from the alien's ship to be the main plot point for the series, i.e. the alien trying to get it back.] Looks like I'm in for the season.

I don't think so, but the encyelopedia article calls him Prince. (BTW, shouldn't you include the Level E encyclopedia entry in the OP?)

This is turning out to be a surprisingly good season for me. Another one I didn't expect much out of but ended up really wowed by the first episode. The character design is great and the alien's character was pretty awesome.

It's nice to have (what I assume to be) a protagonist that doesn't fit the cardboard cut out lead, IE: he's actually hit puberty and isn't a total pushover when it comes to girls, lacking the typical thin frame and feathered hair.

The OP is by far the most stylish of the season with a song to match, the healing/true form scenes were really well done and I'm completely intrigued by this show. Scifi has been kinda dead in the water lately but I've got high hopes for this!

I was moderately excited about this series simply because the original creator did YuYu Hakusho, quite possibly the only "battle" anime I care for or would consider placing among the greatest titles ever made.

That aside, what an amazing first episode! It's nice to see an older art style merged with newer, clean animation. The resulting product is something beautiful, stylized, and oddly refreshing. The script was excellent. The banter between the two main characters is amusing and witty. This series has a nice balance between comedy, drama, and the paranormal.

You can tell that it is written by a seasoned veteran (especially when comparing it to all the other cookie-cutter shows released in the past year or so).

I feel like a kid in a candy store. I'm completely overwhelmed by all that this series has to offer from characters (designs, personality, etc.) to plot to script to animation. Not a single complaint other than I want more right now!

This is, by leaps and bounds, better than anything else out right now. Definitely my favorite release of the season thus far. Now, if only there were a way to make this week shorter so I could have episode 2!

When I saw the subtitle title Level-E I thought it was a typo for Level-C. Whatever you do stayaway from LEVEL-C.

I barely planned to watch, largely because the cover art has a naked guy on the front, I thought that it might be the sign of being yaoi. But the first episode was rather nice, the alien dude was interesting, I rather enjoyed his little bits where he complemented the lead at being a good spoiler[sociopath or criminal]. I don't realy care if he spoiler[is actually a pretty frightening looking bug slug creature] but I wonder what others think.

For some reason it kind of reminded me of The Legend of the Legendary Heroes, the alien guy for one kind of reminds me of a mix between Ryner and Sion. Also has some slight simularities to Occult Accademy, I guess I will be watching in hope that it stays pretty good.

Wasn't sure what to expect from this one, but I loved it overall. I liked the two mains, and the comedy really delivered. Looking forward to see where it goes.

I would have been worried about yaoi if it wasn't done by the creator of YuYu Hakusho. The artist seems to be able to keep a good balance of masculine and feminine male characters and build their relationship around genuine, unmistakable friendship and comradeship rather than male on male lust/attraction/love. YuYu was one of the few action oriented shows that I was able to complete because the friendships and relationships seemed logical and natural even though there were definitely some odd elements. Yoko was the only flamboyant male and even his "love" interest wasn't exploited the way current gay themes are.

I think Level E will display this same mature approach to friendship and relationship building. It's definitely a nice contrast to louder, more forced titles that are built on cliches, parody, and predictable pairings to satisfy the fanbase.

That's good to know.

Anyway, I think this might be my season's gem. Shaft lost the ability to charm with weirdness (I found that I couldn't enjoy Arakawa as much as some of their earlier stuff, and I'm not even talking about Soremachi), but this seems to deliver my weird fix.

I also really dig the character designs. I'm serious, when was the last time you saw a girl in anime look her age and smile so subtly? I think her voice actress is a bit on the generic side (and uncomfortably reminds me of the curry/bread girl from Occult Academy), but I like her nonetheless.

The ending actually shocked me a little, but also reminded of similar plots in the good old Star Trek TOS. Always a good thing, that.

The second episode was even better. Not only does the dynamic between the two leads continue but the girl next door actually proves to be a character of her own and aspoiler[ co-conspirator] rather than just a girl next door that serves as an object of affection.

The end of Prince's story @ the garbage can had me rolling on the floor... this series is really something. Looking forward to seeing what happens with the ultra-creepy Disckonian's.

Man, I wish everybody was watching this. It's hilarious.

I rather like the girl. She's pretty cool.

(I like "YO MAMA'S SO FAT!" "YOU'VE NEVER SEEN HER!")

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say as long as they stay the course they are on this will be best of the season for me, and probably best in a while. Great art and animation, hilarious, interesting, goofy conspiracies and sci fi? Its like they pulled my favorite topics out o' me brain and animated them. The comedy reminds me a lot of Gintama for some reason, especially the ending where they were yelling back and forth I could just picture Gin and Hijikata doing the same thing. Even the little stupid things kill me. In the beginning where spoiler[he was trying to sleep and you hear prince whispering his name and see an eyeball peeking through the door as he asks him if he has a girl he likes, like it is some highschool girls' sleepover; had me laughing hard for about a straight minute or two.]

Man, this show is funny. I nearly lost it when Prince whispered, "Hey, is there a girl you like?" and when he introduced spoiler[the body in the trashcan.] There's a great sense of comedic timing, I think. I really can't wait for more.

Ditto. They're doing a good job of subverting the girl-next-door-crush character. I loved it when she started to look for spoiler[bugs in the apartment.] Very genre savvy.

I agree with batou37, if this continues, it could be the best thing that I've seen in a while (at least since Bakemonogatari). It really has brilliant moments. The comedy just works for me like little else. It's got some of the absurdity of Cromartie (without most of the in-your-face attitude), while still taking itself just seriously enough to be intriguing (in terms of plot). This is I think the reason it's so great.
The girl is also really nice, and a security specialist on top of everything Razz "Yup, he's a former punk". Actually, the word used (chinpira) is also used to describe low-level yakuza; so he's basically a delinquent, again, Cromartie-style. spoiler[And the end of the alien's story, of course... I actually laughed out loud there.] Damn, they make a nice trio, and at least the setup of the following episodes is awesome.
