As described, both story lines seem rather contrived. As a confirmed outsider, I don't think you ever have to work at being on the outside, it sort of comes naturally. Also I don't remember any guy getting a lot of attention due to his appearance. Status, power, personality yes, looks, not so much. High school was a long time ago though so things may have changed.
