Well like most of the Tales of games each entry aside from Ys Origin has its own contained world and story, so there really is no bad starting point in that regard. As for the quality of this game I can't speak to that as I have yet to play it but I'm damn sure hyped about it. Personally I believe any Ys game except Books 1&2 are good starting places.

Technically all Ys games take place in the same world, but Adol's a traveler so he goes from place to place so there's not too much direct continuity, though there are some reoccurring characters. This game takes place between Ys 5 Kefin, Lost City of Sand and Ys 6 The Ark of Napishtem.
If there's any modern-style Ys game to recommend, it would be Ys the Oath in Felgana, the remake of Ys 3, it's considered the best game in the series for the modern hack and slash gameplay.

What
"Anywhere but the beginning of Adol's adventures is a good place to start" Makes literally no sense
They are the games that should be played first, then the others can be played in any order. More specifically the I&II Chronicles+ edition found on Steam

It's probably the bump combat that turns people off. That and the very difficult adventure game elements with the item usage and mazes don't help. Still worth it for the music and atmosphere though.

Gameplay wise they feel dated, the bump into an enemy to attack just isn't as satisfying as the mechanics in later entries. What literally makes no sense to you about people having differing opinions than you on something subjective like a video game?
I would have to agree with Darkabomination and recommend Oath in Felgana or Ys 7 if someone asked me.
