I was curious as to if any one has seen this anime. I have been looking for a new Mecha series, and I was thinking about this one. Can any one give me a little info on it?
Thankyou!

I saw the first two episodes on the last ADVocates disc. It's okay, but nothing special. I like how Ai or whatever her name is was trapped in the Jinki. That was cool.
Oh, and it's "Jinki:Extend". No "ed" at the end.

I saw the free promo episodes, but I haven't made a decision about it yet, although I like this anime theme.
I believe Key is going to do a full review soon. I'm interested in what one of the gurus have to say.
Similar in theme is Sky Girls, which I did find "delicious."

I bought Vol. #1 a few weeks ago (it came out on September 5) and I think it's a pretty good series so far, but it does get a little confusing because the creator is intertwining three different timelines into one series. In order to accomplish this, he's switching from Aoba's story to Akao's story (and back) on the fly. Aoba's story is set in 1988, whereas Akao's story takes place in 1991. The 2001 timeline was briefly shown in the first episode, but from what I heard it will come to play near the conclusion of the series. (It's only a 13-episode series.) The first five episodes focus on how Aoba joined the Angels (the good guys in the series) and her training to become a Jinki pilot. Akao's story appears in small spurts, but it will have a larger role in the second volume when her stroyline converges on Aboa's.
As for Key's review, I'm very curious to read what he thinks about the English dub, especially Brittney Karbowski's (Aoba) and Jessica Boone's (Akao) performances, which IMHO are remarkable.
EDIT: Fixed the date.

Try 1988 instead of 1998. And you're right, the fact that the first volume doesn't ever clarify that point in the series content is either a crucial oversight or a nasty bit of obfuscation.

Short version? Thumbs-up.

Wow, no wonder why I never understood the whole thing. I watched the first few episodes and I liked the whole concept of a robot that required two people to pilot it. But after the first 2 or 3 episodes, I just lost complete track of what was going on. On the other hand, like I said, I did like the robots themselves. And the main heroine herself is likeable in that cute way.

I'm considering buying this, but I'll wait to make my decision until your review pops up, Key. I find this narrative style really interesting. It kind of reminds me of what Urasawa did with 20th Century Boys.

I think it was intentional but poorly executed obfuscation.
I saw the series fansubbed a while back and it was alright but ultimately forgettable. The merging of the timelines was handled pretty poorly in my opinion, and way too much was left unexplained (it seems like they just forgot about several rather important things) or was explained poorly.
Decent premise, shoddy execution. At least the girls were cute.

Hmm, I've never seen any of JE, and I was thinking about borrowing the first disc from someone who bought it, just to check it out. It looks mildly interesting, but with all these watched-on-fansubs-gotta-get-the-DVDs series coming out this fall/winter, I've got to cut down on buying new series, especially if they're only "just interesting enough." Even if it's only three discs, must resist temptation But, I'll see what the review has to say.

I'm one of those who watched all of Jinki: Extend on fansubs back in the day, despite the unfortunate name.
I downloaded the whole series after seeing the first episode which looked promising, but the series really didn't follow through with this potential nearly as well as it could have done.
One example of this that people have already picked up on is the skipping between time periods without explaining things to the viewer. This is obviously meant to be an attempt to make things seem confusing and mysterious just for the hell of it, but done in such a ham-fisted way that it totally fails. This, along with other factors later in the series, e.g.the "special" children, the mother-daughter relationshp, the original ememies whose presence is left totally unexplained firmly places the series in my mind as a Neon Genesis Evangelion clone, but without the funding or, in fact, basic ability that went into the former.
Still, should you pick your way around the many plot holes in the series you will reach a satisfying (if predictable) conclusion, showing that there was some thought put into the series, even if it was poorly realised. The only reason the series still remains especially memorable to me now is the music, which I rather liked. Other than that, the only reason I can think of to recommend the series would be if you really want to see small girls piloting mechs... for some reason
