Wow. Just wow.
I wonder if they're immune to Harmony Gold? They've been extremely quick to sue in the past. |

I wonder how long it will be before HG tries to interfere with this production?

Why do people care about Robotech anymore? It was a hacked-together story that just happened to luck out and be based on a really great series. It was a necessary evil at the time (because of old US broadcasting laws), but now we have the real Macross universe. Imagine if it had started with Southern Cross or MOSPEADA. No one would be talking about it anymore. Now imagine how shitty it would have been if they had to write and create the series from scratch back then. All Robotech did was cause a bunch of legal issues that made it impossible for people who created what made Robotech popular to profit.
(MACROSS 4 EVAR! lol) |

HG should just do the right thing and let someone make a live action Macross movie/tv series. Get 5% of the back end and be happy with it. HG has no chance of ever seeing enough money or talent to make a l/a Robotech movie. But with a huge franchise behind it, Macross would be different.

I think Harmony Gold will have this little project in court by March at the latest.
I agree. I love Macross and Southern Cross to death, and wish that their licenses weren't so tangled, but this constant bashing of Robotech by people that, mostly, haven't even seen it is a bit annoying. Don't even mention those that watched the original series first, and then watched Robotech for no other purpose than to scrutinize every single detail that's different and try to justify Macross always being better (I'm not talking about comparisons either, but blatant hate). Besides, Harmony Gold USA has proven multiple times in the past that they've been willing to play ball with other companies (namely ADV, who even dubbed SDF Macross, and AnimEigo) when it comes to the original versions of Macross, Southern Cross, and MOSPEADA. I believe this was touched on in this Answerman too: animenewsnetwork.com/answerman/2013-08-23 When one of the big NA licensing companies wants a piece of one of these series (and can afford the price being asked by HGUSA, the owner of those NA licenses), we can have these series re-released uncut. |

Okay, after watching that, I really want to see a live action version of Robotech made. Certainly the movie making technology and skill sets are out there that, if properly combined, could produce a very good film.

Robotech is only good because of the quality of the original series. But the only reason people have to prefer Robotech to the originals is that they grew up watching it (nostalgia goggles), and AFAIK you rarely see anything involving the second and third series because... well, they don't have Valkyries. None of the changes added anything, and only took away the most significant story point of Macross. But I'm not bashing Robotech itself. It was a necessary step at the time, but the anime business has mostly advanced past arbitrarily whitewashing characters, editing out content, and changing story points to suit business needs. If they tried that crap today, it would never fly. You should take off the nostalgia goggles and enjoy the originals. Imagine if Star Wars had been spliced with footage from Star Trek and Battlestar Galactica in Japan... the resulting product wouldn't be so great. edit: I forgot to mention that I watched the Macross Saga of Robotech before I watched the original Macross TV series. I liked it, but Macross kicks the shit out of the Robotech version in pretty much every way...especially the voice performances and music. And when you include DYRL, Plus, Zero, and Frontier (I love 7, but it's objectively a very badly-made show), it's no contest. You can get your Robotech and wank for all eternity at HG if the rest of western anime fans get to get a real Macross (plus toys and more). Since that won't happen ever because of HG, a little bit of hate centered at HG and the Robotech universe and its fans is justified. |

Regardless of your opinion of Robotech vs Macross and that nonsense, HG behaves like a copyright troll. |

There is an entire industry built around copyright and patent trolling. In fact IIRC most of the patent lawsuits in the US are filed by companies who make their living off patent lawsuits over patents they bought just for that purpose. |

That's exactly my point. The only time you hear about HG in the news is when someone is being sued. |

That's probably because, IIRC, they're not even in the animation/tv business anymore.
