I really think its dumb to start and finish an anime before the manga even ended. i cant think of a single reason to justify doing this. aren't some of the sotries in the manga left out if they end the anime before the manga even finished. or the anime will be inconclusive?
i heard this is the case for inuyahsa and fruits basket. of course kare kano too but they just never put out a 2nd season for it. sigh.

Actually, it does make sense.
Usually the anime is set for a certain number of episodes and they have to end at that number of episodes. Most series can't justify going on indefinitely while waiting for more manga material and that's a good thing. Just look at Naruto now; it would have been better to just end it and start a new series when there was enough material to use. As a result, many series get a certain number of episodes regardless of how far the manga is.
Sometimes the ratings go down a result in a series getting cancelled. Rurouni Kenshin is an example of this.

^ Well, as described in a "Hey Answerman" article on this very site "Ruroni Kenshin got too far ahead of the manga and the writers had to come up with ridiculous plots of Kenshin fighting bat-humans and Germans with tine ears" (or something to that effect but I love the comment about Germans with tin ears). When a show gets stupid then it deserves to die.

But Fruits Basket didn't really have an end. It only covered about a third of the Manga and it didn't leave anything resolved. We didn't even get to see the Rooster or Horse. I'm pretty sure that the creators left it open so that there could be a possibility of a continuation and they could follow the manga storyline. I may sound like a hopeful idiot, but I really think they might bring back the anime. I mean, its popularity should be enough to justify that.

News Flash: It's often intentional for the anime to end before the manga and leave out stories, because it encourages people to go out and buy the manga to get the complete story. And any half-serious collector isn't going to buy volumes 7-14 because the anime left off after volume 6, they're going to buy 1-6 as well, meaning even more money. It's unfortunate for series like Fruits Basket, Love Hina, and His and Her Circumstances, but the only solution we have is to seek out anime that are either original or based on non-manga sources, like games or novels, though anime based on novels can suffer the same fate as manga-based ones (I'm looking at you, Twelve Kingdoms:!: )
Plus, from a business standpoint, they need to strike while the iron is hot when they make the anime, and that's usually when the manga is in the middle of its run and at a high level of popularity. For something like Naruto (with its much-maligned filler), if they'd waited until 2009 or whenver the manga finished, most of the pre-teen Japanese boys would've moved on to the next big shounen series.
EDIT: (after fighterholic's post) There's a third option: hiatus, like with HunterxHunter, or Tsubasa Chronicle. But, that's not an option for many series aimed at short-attention-span kids.

As people have said, for certain manga series the anime counterpart is just to promote the manga and if they give the anime an open ending, people will want to see what happens to the characters via manga. With long running series though, if the anime catches up to the manga, there's two choices that you have at that point, either filler episodes or stop the anime. Which is what they did with Inuyasha. One Piece I know for a time had fillers, but then they worked it out somehow.
