Clearly most of the voters were rather older in age. Southern All Stars is an older group and I think they're a good choice overall. My favorite on this list would have been Hikki or Ikimonogakari. I think Hikki would've been the best to represent something more global since she has the widest fanbase out of all of those, as far as I know. My absolute favorite band is Bump of Chicken but I knew they wouldnt be on here.

BoC would be spectacular... but from artists represented on that list I would've gone for SMAP, Arashi, or even Fukuyama Masahiro.

Well this is going to be exciting, Japan is home of some of the smartest, and most creative people in the world. I'm sure anything contributed to their Olympic Opening Ceremony is going to be amazing. Looking forward to it!

Not surprised with Southern All-Stars. They are veterans. I'd go for Arashi, Hikki and SMAP for this.

I do have to agree with the sentiment. Hatsune Miku is, in my opinion, the most recognizable and identifiable Japanese artist on a worldwide scale. Most developed countries have been exposed to Miku in some way.
My only rebuttal for this exists in three points.
1) While the world has been generally exposed to her music, only the Far Eastern countries (Japan, China, Korea) and the United States have a real vocal appreciation, with her live concerts taking place in only Japan, the United States, and Singapore. The only other country that can expect Miku any time soon is France in the form of her opera (only because Louis Vuitton was a collaborator).
2) Consider a single Hatsune Miku concert and how much the technology costs to put it on. Now consider a concert that has to compete on a global scale. Now consider there is only one way the technology can work via holographic projection. You have to be directly facing the stage in order for the full effect to take place. Anywhere else and the effect is incomplete or moot. There's a reason why Gorillaz never did extensive touring using the virtual avatars. They may have been the first, but only two concerts could be filmed using that technique. Camera angles and cinematography would be limited; that could put off broadcasters as they want everything to look perfect during their broadcast.
And finally 3) She is a program. Aside from the fact that critics don't call her a real musician, think about the intricate and often mind-numbing process it takes to set up a single concert. There is no perfect computer program. If a live singer has a problem it can hopefully be remedied. Miku doesn't have that luxury. If one single element is out of place or the concert is the target of a cyberattack, the show's done. Think of how tantalizing the biggest stage in the world is to hackers. The bigger the stage, the more doors there are. Find a unlocked one and the system fails.
In short, Miku needs more of a world audience to actively support her through live interaction and the Olympic virtual concert needs to be one of the most expensive concerts ever produced. As much as I want Miku at the Olympics, it's difficult to see something truly grand happening with current technology.
However, this was only a popularity survey. Give or take eight years down the road, Southern All Stars might become irrelevant and Miku might become globally recognized as the rightful singer at the Olympics. Time will tell as always.
