Today Apple anounced a video iPod and they will sell not only music video but some tv show.
If Japanese TV station or Anime studio start selling new ep. of their Anime titles @ iTMS with Sub/Dub every week, do you wanna buy it ? How much can you pay for it ? ($1.99/ep. is good ?) |

I was just going to make a topic on this. To keep things in prespective, it should be noted that I'm an iPod junkie. I currently have a 20 GB U2 iPod, and now I'm thinking about upgrading to the 60GB video models (I'm about 2.5 GB from filling up my U2 iPod, anyways...), I think that downloading anime from the iTunes Music Store would be a great idea. $2 an episode seems reasonable enough, considering that anime DVD's go for $25-$30 anyways with 3-4 episodes per disc as the norm. The only question is: how in the hell are you going to read subtitles on a small iPod screen? I just hope you can use the accessory A/V cable Apple is pimping here to hook up the iPod to a TV to watch the shows the way they were meant to be intended. I also wonder if you can burn videos to a CD or DVD: it appears that the iTMS videos use QuickTime (big shock there), but does it have DRM? Aside from that, it's a great idea.
Thoughts? |

You are right, 320x240 on 2.5" LCD is too small to read Sub...
So only what I can hope is that they distribute Opening/Closing part as music clip. BTW, We can buy some title's latest episode (like Eureka Seven) every week at Japanese website ($1.5 per episode, but unfortunately only streaming, not downloadable) so 1.99 can be possible, I think. |

Well, if I were to get that ipod I would probably liked to pay for anime for it. I mean I think that'd be a nice thing to have when I'm bored somewhere and don't have my portable DVD player with me. Just whip out this little ipod and watch something. I think it's a great idea. Only problem is I probably wouldn't use it much. Like I said I have a portable dvd player so when I'm travelling I just bring that along. Only time I would use it would maybe to get out of work for like 5 mins.

By "new ep. of their anime titles," I assume you are referring to titles currently airing on Japanese TV/cable/satelite stations? I really doubt we'll be seeing new anime with subs or a dub. First, adding subs or a dub would increase production costs, so they'd have to increase the cost of the individual episodes. (Increasing the price, means fewer people willing to purchase.) Second, the English-speaking people of the world are not their target audience. That said, it's likely we'll run into the same problems as iTunes Japan. You'll probably need a Japanese credit card or their gift cards/certificates in order to make purchases. I think the questions are: Will episodes of new licenses (whether raw, sub, or dub) be made available on iTMS in N. America before the DVD release? And will uncut episodes of animes airing on TV be available? |

Waitaminute... if this is right, you can hook the fifth-gen iPod up to a TV to watch video. If true, that solves the problem of reading subtitles. Now, I wonder if you can burn your episodes to CD or DVD...

Then what's the point of having an iPod that plays video? You can build a media box (computer) that does the same thing for alot cheaper than an iPod. Besides, the only plus of the iPod is portablility - watch your TV shows during your commute.

I think the point is that the iTMS could provide a cheap, legal alternative to fansubs, much like how the iTMS already provides a cheap, legal alternative to illegal music downloading... |

Well, if they delivered anime off iTMS then you could just download it directly to your computer and forgo the iPod thing altogether. It would just be another way to get anime. At present only five ABC shows are available online, so it seems that anime will be a long way off. As far as viewing it from your iPod, get serious people, you'd have to listen to the dub because subtitles aren't even an option. Its not like it would kill anyone. Although I should point out that a real iPod video is in the works with a screen twice the size of the current model, although if the current video feature fails to draw interest we may never see it. Either way the larger-screened version would be available long before anime might be offered.

And where in any of my posts here do I mention illegal downloading? I specifically address legal downloading through iTMS (either in Japan or the US). I also addressed the problems anyone living outside of Japan will likely have downloading "legal" video from iTMS Japan. They are the same as we currently have with iTMS Japan now: You need a Japanese credit card or their specific gift card/certificate. So until this changes, or you've got a friend in Japan to keep you stocked in the gift cards, those of us living outside of Japan are out of luck. The point of my post was why pay around $200 more for an iPod rather than build a computer that can do the exact same thing? I can only come up with 1 possiblity: The iPod is easily portable. As for a cheap, legal alternative...I think we have too many people in anime fandom that will find any number of reasons/excuses to continue to download their anime "for free." |

I must state, that while I super support the flowing stock of improved inovative iPods each year, I fail to see the real major high point of a video iPod, at least for the time being. 2-3 hours of playtime just won't really cut it for any long car trip or anything, and will likely wear down the battery of it's number of charges very fast as well.
However, I give them kudos on making the wonderful device even thinner, and a wider screen (not to mention 20 hours of music playback sounds super delicious.) -------------------- In terms of anime, I personally doubt that it'll become an immidiate reality. But it does finally open up the doors for companies to do official, downloadible releases. Like how the iTms brought an influx of people over to legal music downloading, perhaps they can do the same for video. |

If there were a video iPod, and if the device were popular enough, I doubt the weekly/biweekly anime plan is going to happen. For one thing, I doubt $1.99 is going to work. Maybe if anime were much more popular here, but then you need people who will do many shows and not just say -Bleach or Black Cat- and that would cost money. In Japan, people pay more for a lot of things, so I doubt something like 3.99 over there would work. It might over here, but I like packaging. But hey, I'm no economist, so I don't know about the validity of my post.
