The box sets are scheduled to be released in mid-July and just wondering which one anime fans would recommend.

Well, if you're taking requests, could you send me both?

For an anime fan, I'd recommend 08th MS Team but for a Gundam fan 0083 is more 'interesting' because it describes important events of the UC timeline
Both of them present interesting plots, character development and mecha action though

I liked 08th MS Team better. It has a much higher rating than Gundam 0083 in the Encylopedia.

I'm gonna agree with Guilhem on this, in my own experience, 08th MS Team appeals more to non-Gundam fans that 0083

Get 'em both, as both are excellent series. I'll be getting 0083 however to replace the POS bootleg I have. I've already got all four volumes of 08th MS Team though so I won't be getting the collection for that one.

I'll have to agree with majority, both are really good, and if you can get them both. 08th MS Team story is different than your typical rookie accidentally gets in state of the art mobile suit, beats combat veterans, becomes excellent pilot, ala, Gundam 079, 083, Gundam Seed, etc. Plus I thought the overall story of 08th MS Team is a lot better. I really enjoyed both but if its one or the other 08th MS Team is a sure bet.
Also Gundam 080 is going to be released as well, I have never seen it but I bet its good, no Gundam show has ever let me down yet, plus 6 episodes, 20 bucks, cant go wrong.

In terms of timeline 08th MS takes place more-or-less at the start of the UC...it's a little over a quarter of the way through Mobile Suit Gundam by the first Episode.
Whereas 0083: Stardust Memory is set inbetween Zeta & the Original Series. It's a prequel designed to be supplementary to both Series, so it isn't something you should see without having at least seen the Original.

If it's my money, I'd buy 0080. I like the story better than 0083, which would be second place. 08th MS Team has a recap movie - Miller's Report. I'm not sure if it's on R1 DVD yet, but I'd rather purchase that, than a whole box set. Sure, it's not 100% the same, but you'll still get most of the same effect, and be ready to watch the later shows. Plus, the monetary and time investment is much easier to swallow!

I prefer 0083 to 08th MS Team.
I like action-packed movie and 0083 story is quite enjoyable too.

8th MS team all the way. It's story is different from most gundams. It shows what the average joes in the war were doing and not focusing on some kid piloting the most powerful gundam out there.

Yeah, or some flaky blonde chick
I swear (in the dub, at least) Nina's got to be one of the most annoying characters ever.

Actually, while Miller's Report is availible as an R1 release, I wouldn't suggest it over watching the actual series because it only covers a few events of the first two DVDs and I think an episode off the third DVD, which would leave you in the dark with the about half of the series

I may be wrong, but from what I understand, Miller's Report is in the box set. So, you're getting both, and I think fot the same price as the 0083 box.
