Guess it goes to show just how well utilized the encyclopedia here is. It's nice that it's fairly comprehensive when it comes to the anime titles that are found here.

Yeah, we're aware of this problem and have been discussing methods to deal with it. Complaining to the sites is obviously out of the question since they don't give a damn about intelectual property. Threatening them is probably out of the question since 95% of bootleg sites are set up in manners that make it very hard to take them to court. The result is that we need to keep them from using the encyc. Or at least make it a litlle annoying and time consuming. -t |

Perhaps the Encyclopedia could be restricted to registered users only? I don't know if that would act as enough of a deterrent, but it might help.

I can see where that might alleviate a bit of the problem, but ANN is linked at the top of most any google search if one is looking for a manga title. [This URL is a known Fansub Distribution website], another bootleg site, utilizes ANN's descriptions for many of their files. |

While it's true that google does indeed have them come at the top of the list, it doesn't appear to have the encyclopedia info cached. Ideally, clicking on the link if requires user registration would automatically bring it back to the login page, unless already logged in. This may not be the best fix, but I can see it being implemented fairly easily. |

What's to stop them from just setting up a bogus registration and accessing the encyclopedia that way? Sure it would take a little of their time, but you have to admit it's not all that hard. There are tons of people who create an account and never do anything after that (like post or contribute to the site). The bootleggers could easily make their account look legit, especially with the large number of members ANN has.

Well, the idea is to make it a deterrent. Perhaps a seperate login for the Encyclopedia? Or a cookie that expires when the browser closes? No direct linking to the Encyclopedia? I just can't seem to come up with any other ideas that will help with this at the moment, but I'd like to think something can be done. |

Making the encyc a registered user only feature is absolutely out of the question.
The types of deterrents we're looking at include: 1) Parsing the encyclopedia text with garbage text that would be invisible to regular browsers, but show up when trying to cut&paste the text. 2) Display the encyclopedia text in a Java applet that doesn't allow C&P 3) Generate an image based on the text and display that. 4) Use Java script to disable copy&paste. We don't like any of those options though, so we're looking for something that will have similar results, but not change the way the site looks to regular viewers. options 1,2&3 will also hurt us when it comes to search engines. Option #4 is extremely easy to get around, but has the least ill effects on the site. Last edited by Tempest on Wed May 25, 2005 12:31 pm; edited 1 time in total |

Glad to hear that. These would be very annoying, especially the last 2 options. |

I've seen most of these types of things implemented in the past, so I don't know why my brain was stuck in user mode last time - save that when I'm tired, I don't think outside the box too well. At the very least, the 4th option should, in effect, deter people from doing the C & P. While I have used info from the Encyclopedia before myself, I credit it as my source when I do so. |
