Why do they like Cars so much over there? Pixar's most mediocre effort by far, and they eat it up like candy.

It takes places in Glorious Nippon, of course. And maybe the terribleness of Larry doesn't come through in a Japanese dub.

Yea you'll never see that many foreign films let alone animation here in the states. Shows the huge difference in acceptance of foreign entertainment.

It has to do with Hollywood making the biggest and most expensive movies that go worldwide, because international audiences want to see them. We do get foreign things, but the theaters tend to be packed already with so much domestic programming.

Because it's about cars. Cars and trains are popular in Japan. Same reason why Thomas the Tank Engine is popular. That puts it above all of Pixar's other stuff for them. Same thing with Toy Story being about toys. Funnily enough all the inanimate object movies do much better there than the ones about humans. Or maybe they prefer CG animation when its about objects and not people? Who knows, really.
