After watching the said film, I read in some online interview that Shinkai left the ending the way it was for viewers to personally interpret what happens to Tataki and Akari after their crossing at the train tracks. So I was just wondering, how did everyone else interpret the ending and what happens afterwards?
Personally, I think that Tataki's meeting with Akari after all those made him realize he needed to fix his relationship with his ex, and it also made him realize that she was within reach of him and that he would be able contact her whenever he wanted if he needed her encouragement to move on in life. I think it is even possilbe that they reestablish contact with one another after their fated reunion. So what did everyone else think happens after the ending?

My interpretation of it isn't so optimistic. The way I see it when Takaki and Akari pass each other at the train tracks it's suppose to be showing the contrast in how they've moved on. They both catch a glimpse of the other as they pass by. And before they can stop and see if it was actually them the train goes by. In that time I think Akari thought she was mistaken and simply kept walking. This is showing that she has moved on and doesn't obsess over what could have been. Oh the other side of the track Takaki was desperately waiting to see if it really was her. But when he sees that the mysterious girl is no longer there he realizes that she's not in his life anymore and he needs to move on. Of course this is just how I see it. In general I think it was a very well crafted ending that lets the viewer breath their own thoughts and emotions into it.

I personally felt that the idea was that they never actually met at the crossroads; him seeing her was more him reminiscing on a past that never became present. While I too think the "encounter" was showing that Takaki couldn't move on (and the second arc of the movie kind of made this point as well) I also think Akari is in another place entirely, both metaphorically and physically. I don't believe it was meant to be a happy ending, and I don't really remember questioning in my mind any part of the ending either.. Might go rewatch it now though, I forget most of the subtle details.

I interpreted it much the same was as Skylark. Takaki and Akari shared something special once, but that's past now, and only Takaki is having trouble letting it go. For the record, I felt this was probably the closest to a perfect ending there could have been; It certainly had more impact than a 'happy' ending, and resonated deeper for it.
I'm glad the OP was able to see a sunny side of things, but it just wasn't there for me.

Me making loud noises of frustration, shutting the DVD player off, and throwing the thing in my "Never Going to watch again/Sell" pile.

By all means sell it. Unless the typical R1 customer is willing to import one of the other English-language releases available, an ADV copy should fetch a fair price online. (Those not willing to pay such a price should consider the aforementioned alternative means of obtaining it.)

Yeah, its around $120 used for a copy(I'm not paying that much just for the DVD). Thanks for your input though. The reason why I find the ending of the film unique is that it can be interpreted in many different ways, and getting the opinions of what everyone thought of the ending was fairly interesting. Thanks for the input

I completely agree.
I honestly only liked the 2nd part of this movie, it had the best visuals and was very touching.

Like all of his works, it's about time and distance and how it affects relationships.
Akari moves on; Takaki is stuck in the past. But at the end of the movie, I think he finally decides to cherish the past for what it was and go forward with his life.
I haven't seen it in a while so perhaps my interpretation is a bit weak. Regardless, it is one of my favorite films. Whether people like it or not, 5 Centimeters Per Second should be very easy to relate to for almost any watcher.

How much is it worth? I saw Amazon sellers listing it at $90 and above. Is that realistic? I actually like the movie, but suspect it'll get a US release Blu-ray at some point. So if I can cash in my DVD copy now, that would be pretty sweet.

You should be able to get at least $90.
The moment this movie is relicensed I will be putting my copy on Amazon and/or eBay.

But... then it won't be worth anything?

Not true. I just sold my FLCL Ultimate Edition for $160 (which I bought for around $45; can't find the receipt). FLCL is relicensed and has an upcoming BD release.
Same with Texhnolyze. Just got relicensed. I could have probably gotten more if I waited, but I bought it for $27 and sold for $70. The price for that set seems to be on the rise lately.

Its so sad that this movie isn't licensed in the states anymore. And on top of that ADV only had the license for it for a very short time so there aren't to many copies out there (which is the main reason for the crazy prices on the remaining dvds). As much as I love this movie I really don't think it's right to expect us to pay that much for one dvd. It amazes me that no one has stepped up to license the movie yet.

That's... strange. Supply/Demand says the opposite should be true. When something is scarce, and demand is high, the price is high. when something is common, and demand is high, the price is low.
At any rate, I've just put my copy up for sale on Amazon. We'll see if anyone bites.
