I've been watching To Love-Ru recently. After the ANN reviews piqued my interest, i thought I'd have a looksee. I've gotten up to episode 6 now, and all I have to say really is this:

I don't believe this anime has any worth. It's awful. Everything here is a cliché, or a rehashed idea. It's true that common themes and situations run through a lot of anime, but there are ways of doing it right, and ways of doing it wrong. To Love-Ru seems to get it so very, very wrong.

I'm not a harsh judge (heh, after spending the first paragraph slating the anime). I've tried to find likeable things about it, positive things to take away from it. I'm really struggling, guys. The protagonist is horrendous, and a waste of a decent seiyuu. Lala herself is a carbon copy of soooo many leading ladies its untrue. The fan service, god rest it's soul, is generic. Yes, generic fan service. Jiggly boobs, skirt shots for the sake of skirt shots. Yes, that's what fan service is supposed to do, but it's constant, and not alluring in the slightest. The situations are stupid, and I'm at the point where I really don't give a damn what happens to any of the characters, much less who Rito will end up with. spoiler[Though judging by the predictability of the show, I'd say over the course of 26 episodes and many trials together, some probably involving Rito going into space to fight/meet the parents/whatever, he'll inevitably realise he loves Lala. Yawn.]

It looks nice enough I suppose, with decent animation. But I can't see any reason to recommend this show to anyone. Ever. This kind of thing has been done so many times before, and much better. Where do you draw the line and realise there's only so much you can flog a tired idea?

Ok, now, someone disagree and prove me wrong. I'd like an open discussion if possible Smile

(Edit:: The OP isn't bad either, I guess. The song, not the images Wink )

I wouldn't say its awful just... average. It's not bad, it simply rehashes some elements that have been around for a while, does decently with them (the male lead is far more respectable than most), but thus far it simply fails to really stand out. It is, however, much better than Kanokon, the only other fanservice/harem series this season. At least I don't actively dislike the lead characters here.

Your spoiler prediction is wrong, it will end open ending because the popular manga for it is still ongoing and to end it would kill any chance of a sequel which would be the equivalent of flushing money down the toilet.

Anyway the manga gets a lot better once more of the girls in the OP are introduced, especially Yami and Yui... need a second season since chapters 70-99 have been awesome for Yui fans... that rpg parody was awesome.

It's a fun manga. The anime isn't as well drawn, but it's still pretty fun. You have to be the kind of person that finds blatent fanservice more amusing than annoying to enjoy it though, since there's so much of it.

I've only read a few chapters in random Jumps that my teacher has given me... and it isn't groundbreaking or lifechanging..
It does seem funny and enjoyable in a casual way though. Maybe the overarching story isn't quite so good, I'll have to check out the anime.

Judging by his statement, I rather pick this an average rather than the worst by my impression looking on to this series. I wouldn't say it's cliché, 'cause by the reaction of the character I might say it's considerable good, maybe the story doesn't keep up going, or characters are fed up with need some improvement. I read the manga once and I found it more interesting. I knew someone would rant 'bout this series.

I'm glad to be the one to oblige Smile

I'm also glad readers of the manga have replied. I was judging this series purely as a standalone anime, because I blatantly haven't read the manga. As I said in my original post, I don't WANT to hate it or anything, I just struggle to find redeeming features within it. Judging by the noises being made here, the manga is considerably better.

I'll keep watching. Despite the lame tentacle porn nonsense in the latest episode, I'll see it through til the end. I just got frustrated, I guess, that generic anime that adds nothing new to it's genre continues to be produced. I suppose it's a guaranteed sell for the studio, and it'll always have an audience.

Thanks to all who replied so far

Smile

any pantyshots without the panties?

Anyways, atleast the animation is quite nice.

its not awful or anything. Its just really really generic from what I've heard...so it will only seem awful to a person who seen plenty of these kind of anime...but to some people whos never seen any ecchi series before, this can be new and refreshing...
But the are some ecchi series who are great even to people whos seen tons of it already...like Mahoromatic...totally unique maid ecchi series...and They are my noble masters. I dont know why I like that one so much...its really generic...but it just stood out, maybe is because of the spoiler[Incest rape comedy between Shinra and Miyu] that seems so refreshing to me. Or maybe I just like the ending theme.

This anime is Hentai, plain and simple. Like hentai then u'll like this anime without a doubt. This is my first time watching an anime so freakishly bizzare. I quit after ep ep1.

I call BS on that. What is borderline Hentai is "Kanokon." It not only crosses the line, it takes a chainsaw to it Twisted Evil.

As for "ToLove-Ru," it's just another fanservice anime. I haven't lost time watching it like I did with "Rosario + Vampire," and it's quite silly. Though the only thing I don't get is why no one seems to notice Lala's tail.

Really?...does it involve loli characters too? does it start off cute and crawls slowly to gory and disturbing like higurashi? Or is chainsaw just an expression these days? Im gonna check it out in wikipedia...just cant get enough of the disturbing stuff after watching higurashi and narutaru.....

P.S Its not Hentai unless you see the following....
BJs, yuri action, and vaginal intercourse...and the obvious bit of what 'coming' after that....
This show is just ecchi...which is using sex as a source of humor...its one of teh best humor out there...closely followed by twisted violent humor...

It comes up. At first they write it off as a costume piece. Wink

Anyways, one thing I enjoy about this series that I think helps break it away form many harem shows, is (very minor spoiler) spoiler[He doesn't inevitably end up with Lala. It quickly becomes clear to everyone that there's a real race to be had here, and she's not winning it. Too many of these things the lead guy is clearly "meant" to be with the crazy space chick or whatever and spends the entire series denying it. In this one, he clearly likes her, but not like that, and wants nothing more than to end up with Sairenji, which I assume he'll do eventually. ]

I think that once the series gets going, the characters seem much more natural and human than they do in this sort of show. It's not Hentai (although the collected manga volumes kinda are), but it's obviously an echi series. Personally, if I wanted pron, I could do a lot better, but I enjoy the sort of sexual humor they employ, and I think it's got some real heart to it. Best series ever? Heavens no. Best of the season? Not even close, but when I'm out of new episodes of Macross, Druaga, Toshoukan Sensou, Soul Hunter, Real Diver, REBORN, One Piece, Naruto, and Bleach, it's a fun series to watch. Wink

to love ru is a fanservice anime pure and simple. I've yet to see any coherent story begin to develop. The first 2 or 3 episodes had a decent amount of story. It however appears that there's less story as it continues. I've seen through episode 7. I'm probably going to finish it since I started it.

I disagree completely, it's obviously setting it up for a spoiler[Lala ending. Even with the latest chapter he still prefers Sairenji but you can see that he is liking Lala more and more as the manga progresses. To Love Ru is sorta similar to Ichigo 100% in that if one of the two out fo the main male character and the intended love target from the start confessed to each other it would be over. But like Ichigo 100% at the rate To Love Ru is going it won't matter. Also Sairenji won't confess because she knows that will hurt Lala who she considers a friend.

Lala or Harem/open ending.]

After watching the first episode I couldn't help feeling like a part of my brain just died. Kinda the same feeling I got after watching the first episode of rosario+vampire.
