Yay!
Oh I hope the movie gets a blu-ray release. :3 The dance and dueling scenes would be so intense I might have a seizure. I'd pre-order it in a heartbeat.

So I'm assuming this remastered as well? Rightstuf, will you ever cease to amaze me?

Have to say, while the visuals are mind-blowing and the music gets an upgrade, I do not care that much for the movie. I loved the character development of the series, and all that complexity pretty much disappears and gets replaced with... well, naked bobsledding lesbians. Which, while fun, isn't quite as good IMnsHO.

Wait, didn't TRSI say two days ago that they hadn't gotten the rights yet or were they just not able to say? Whatever the case I think the Utena fans have died and gone to a very happy place now.

I view the movie as an extension of the tv series really. I don't really feel the need to compare them like that, especially since you can't even cram in that kind of character development an hour and a half film. As a film, I love it a lot. Definitely my favorite animu movie. The crazy avant-garde symbolism was mind blowing. Loved every minute of it.
And they were lesbians in the tv series anyways (as stated in the commentary). Ikuhara didn't care about Saito quitting the project at that point in time by him going overly overt with it, which was what she threatened to do during the production of the tv series. Not saying it being represented by subtext and slightly more subtle (or unsubtle) visual cues was bad either, but that was the intent all along.

WHAT THE HELL!
Someone at Nozomi better confirm this soon. I'm thinking of getting rid of my copy of the CPM release now.

Bah, the only person in the whole show who was a lesbian was Juri. Everyone else was totally bi. You're not a lesbian if you're still going trying to go after guys as well as girls.
But that aside...
I wonder if this means the movie will be with the box set, or sold separately. I believe the Japanese boxset(s) had the movie included which is why I was surprised when Right Stuf claimed they didn't have the movie.
Then again they haven't said whether or not they're going for a similar box set style to the Japanese collection. I really hope they do because that design was awesome, and I'd be willing to put down a ton of money for it seeing as I was already willing to put down hundreds of bucks for the CPM dvds.

This is one of my all time favorite series (including the movie), I'm glad that people who missed the first DVD release have a chance to see it. If this gets a Blu-ray release I'd probaly double-dip, but I don't believe Nozomi does Blu-ray yet.

Two women together in a relationship = lesbian couple. They have sexual romantic/sexual attraction to each other anyways. I don't think you need to go deeper into it than that, but yeah the bi-sexual nature of most Utena characters are obvious. Anthy's sexual preference though I don't think would be determined by the fact she did it with Akio since that was forced on her like everything else including the princess role of the rose bride. You also forgot that Juri hit on Miki in the film.

Yeah, I'm sure the student council had many orgies, but Juri was full on lesbian as far as I can tell. She just liked teasing Miki because he was so cute. There was never really any indication that Juri was attracted to or sleeping with any of the guys.
Still though, you're not a lesbian if you like guys. Tv series Utena and movie Utena had relationships with men. I'm not saying she's straight, I'm just saying she likes the guys too. If that wasn't the case than most of what she went through in the show wouldn't have been possible.
I love that Utena has been licensed again. I haven't been able to discuss it with people in forever.

The musical also came with the Japanese box set, and I highly doubt that's going to get added. ^_- Although, it would rather amusing to have a subbed version of it. Then we can all sing along about wanting to become a prince!
I'm not nearly so excited about the movie, because I have the remastered R2, and honestly, having subtitles doesn't make the movie make anymore sense.

I think you're discounting Juri hitting on him in that scene. It's kind of obvious to me Juri/Shiori is a parody of the big sister/little sister type relationships that pop up all over shoujo yuri titles especially in the "s genre" (Marimite being a good example of a property that is in this tradition). Due to Miki being more submissive and feminine than more massculine dudes (like say Toga), that may be why she would make an exception for him.
And please, lesbian is an identity. Yeah, you can only have a sexual orientation of liking girls only but many bi-sexual girls choose to only date women for whatever reason. I don't see why they don't deserve the title as much as anyone else. Lesbian love is a love between two women. It doesn't matter to me that one of them had a previous experience with a guy before. You're also ignoring the fact that this is supposed to take place during "adolescence" when sexual experimentation takes place. So even if she had a relationship with a guy during this period, it doesn't mean she couldn't mature into someone who only wants relationships with females.

Hurray! Utena the TV Series and Utena the Movie licensed! Hair splitting arguments over which fictional characters are lesbians in relationships with bisexuals and which fictional characters are bisexuals in relationships with lesbians break out!
