Finals
Shu Maritani, Now and Then, Here and There
vs.
Duck/Princess Tutu, Princess Tutu

A tough one. would not mind seeing either win. I can not readily vote against either.
Vote: Shu It seems voting against him is more distastefull to me currently. Totally personal preference, and not by much. Both Shu and Duck are great, and the final vote comes down to my personal whim.

Well, for some reason I've been much more interested in watching this tournament than in participating, but it's time to come out of the wood works and throw my support behind Shu. I'm still of the persuasion that this little equation describes heroism: Number op people helped/(Skill of help+number of people doing the helping). Duck and Shu are both one person, they both helped an entire world so that leaves their respective skills. Shu has a stick and he sucks with it, so he shows more heroism.

I think the problem is that Ahiru’s moments of weakness don’t undermine Ahiru’s achievements credibility while in Shu’s case it is sometimes hard to believe that he can pull off some of his reckless actions so easily.

The last clip is an example of it as Shu is passing through corridors of a fortress full of soldiers without being stopped on the way. One would think that there should be soldiers to protect the fortress from intruders, especially since there was an intrusion in the past (Clip 2). There are some soldiers who follow him, but he is already far from his prison cell when they catch up with him in this room. What I find strange is that no one stopped him earlier. If he took Nabuca’s uniform, I would believe that he deceived security guards with it, and had passed before they realized what was going on. But he wears his usual outfit, soldier that is on guard should immediately consider it suspicious that someone without a uniform is going around the fortress.

It looks as if there are/were(?) no security guards on the way, either way, the success of this escapade is a bit too convenient for my liking.

Let's leave "the improbable circumstances of the series, which allowed the hero to do heroic things when he shouldn't have been able to" arguments out of this, or I could fill up pages with all of the improbabilities lurking in Princess Tutu. With both series you have to accept certain things for what they are.

Haven't been in most of the rounds, but I've said it once, and i'll say it again: When it comes to heroism, few can stand against Shu when it gets down to it, and he deserves to win this one in my opinion.

Oddly enough i don't particularly agree with some comments on Duck, i never found the character to be overly heroic, but I can at least understand why some do.

With a bit less than 23 hours left the two contenders are currently running neck and neck - which is probably as it should be. This one's gonna be close!

Well, as much as I would like Duck to win, I certainly wouldn't object to a tie!

I vote for Shu!

spoiler[He was thrust into a horrific situation without any warning, and managed to retain his idealism throughout it all.]

My vote in the finals goes to Shu.

He's drawn into the conflict completely by accident, and would have been fully justified to just walk away or cooperate with Hellywood and perhaps be sent home. After all, he's in a strange place at a strange time. Lala-Ru is the only person he really knows, and Shu only just met her. However, Shu chooses to stand for what's right, to try and protect Lala-Ru, Sara and anyone else he can. His reward for that stand: He's imprisoned, tortured, left for dead, conscripted and otherwise abused. I find this more heroic than Duck, who is drawn into the story because she wants to be with Mytho.

Also, Shu has no special powers, skills or fighting ability to speak of (I think his kendo practice shows this well.) Yet Shu overcomes this by never giving in, never losing his idealism and his belief in right and wrong. This has more sway in the story than if he was a black belt and kicked everyone's ass. Compared to Duck, a magical girl who uses the power of her dance to make things better, Shu shows more strength of spirit.

My final votes goes to Duck. She has a type of an elegance not found in Shu's character. I believe that Shu's selflessness and caring is top-notched but, I believe that both characters are fairly even in this measure. Shu is a tad more reckless, and the opposition faced by Shu seems a bit too ridiculous and absurd though Duck's circumstances can border on the hokey and cheesy at times. Will be happy with whoever wins, and I am glad that this round is coming down to the wire because this match deserves to be close.

At this final stage of the tournament it's fair to say I am going to experience a certain amount of regret as a result of voting against either character, considering I've been previously convinced by the different arguments that have been presented in favor of them both, so no particular reasoning will be strong enough to make that uncomfortable feeling completely go away precisely due to the fact they are both worthy.

Having said the above, I am voting for Duck because of what her ultimate moment of heroism represents and my admiration for the concept of fighting against fate itself. That might not quite match Shu's consistently heroic idealism despite the daily brutalities of his situation in purely quantitative terms, but it certainly displays an impressive quality, an exceedingly great amount of selflessness and the ability to keep on fighting even after practically giving everything up with little to no chance of victory.

The Best Hero/Heroine Tournament is now closed. . .

. . .And instead of having an overall winner, it looks like we're going to have a Best Hero and Best Heroine separately.

Yes, ccdx was right. We have an 11-11 tie to finish the tournament - the first time that's ever happened, I believe.

A proposal was made to me to extend the final round for an extra day to get a decisive outcome, on the basis that a tie would be an understandably anti-climactic way to finish things. I do not agree. Nearly all of the regular voters have chimed in for this round, and I'd rather not have the final result being decided by a random person who has vote irregularly or never before. Besides, many people have commented that their decision was a tight one and/or that they'd be happy with either candidate winning, so I think this is fitting.

These have always been tournaments "for the people," though, so if several people speak up and say they'd prefer to extend the tournament by a day or two to get an absolute decision then I'll do it. Barring that, though:

BEST HERO: Shu Maritani, Now and Then, Here and There

BEST HEROINE: Duck (Ahiru)/Princess Tutu, Princess Tutu

Post-Mortem to follow.

I think the tournament should be extended. It was stated at the beginning that this tournament was to decide who is the most heroic of them all. If it ends in a tie then it clearly has failed in reaching that goal.

I don't think that if someone is a first time voter or not should be "held against them" at any point in the tournament. One of the rules is that anyone who is a forum member is allowed to vote at anytime.

And besides I know that at least Olliff seemed on the fence about changing his vote. There are also still a few voters who have voted in past rounds, but have not voted this round yet. They would not be first time voters.

Anyone could still potentially change their vote as well.

A single winner should be the result. Having a tie seems, counter productive to me.

I am fine with whatever the majority (or effectively the most vocal plurality) decides, including but not limited to leaving things just as they are. Contests can end with a tie, but there can also be a tiebreaker.

I don't care what is done regarding the match voting. Regardless, I'm still sticking with my vote for Shu.
