What do you think of dub blooper reels (or outtakes) found in some R1 DVDs as extras?
For example: Noein Outtakes 1 Princess Tutu Blooper Reel 1 Do you think they show a fun side to the VAs or do you think it makes them sound blatantly unprofessional? Do you think they're a waste of time or do they sometimes say some really hilarious lines that make you glad they put it on the disc? I personally like the ones I've seen, some of the lines are downright hilarious lines that you'd never be able to hear anywhere else ("Cris-Crispin Freeman get out of my bedroom!"). But sometimes some of the lines they put there just seemed immature or borderline immature, which I like if they're subtle but sometimes they aren't. On a DVD whose only "extras" are clean opening/ending and previews, it seems like something simple that could be added, these shows weren't dubbed in a single take, that's for sure, and odds are they were recording anyway while waiting for the perfect delivery. |

I think the Gurren Lagann outtakes were the best, mainly because of Steven Jay Blum reminding us how awesome he was as Leeron.

^ Those were good, but the funniest outtakes I've ever heard PERIOD were on the Berserk DVDs. I mean, they were all around 5-8 minute long reels per disc, and they were SO funny..."unique," let's put it. The VA who plays Griffith is a broadway singer and...uh... let's just say he puts a little Disney... and Oklahoma... among other things... into Griffith.
Take the first two here for instance. Olde English guys talkin' gangsta? Yes, please! But back on the topic, psssh! Immature, whatev! Outtakes are my personal favorite special feature on anime DVDs. I also like behind the scenes with the Japanese staff or the english voice actors stuff a lot, but...oh, outtakes make my day. Every show should have them. There's a reason these people do voiceover for cartoons...they are energetic, often funny folks. In particular, a lot of female voice actors are the kind of funny I strive to be. There aren't many (...any?) good mainstream female comedians that aren't completely trashy and forcing it. The organic goofy humor is what I love, and you get to hear that all over anime outtakes. I find them hilarious. I love how they show how normal VA's are. Many a times when I was watching Tutu, I said things like "Rue, you bitch" or "Awkward yaoi moment" and then they'd say similar things on the blooper reel. After watching the blooper reel, it made me feel like I'd enjoy having brunch with them or something similar (I wouldn't mind having brunch with Jessica Boone ); it makes them seem like normal, easily approachable people.

Question, would you all consider Shinji's Rant to be a blooper? It's not him messing up the lines hilariously so much as the VA's commentary on how the series ended.
And why weren't the Gurren Lagann Bloopers on one of the 6 DVDs? Good thing for youtube, eh? I'm hoping that they were there and I simply missed them. One of the things I appreciate about these is that, for the most part, they're all in character when they do these. That only adds for the hilarity in some cases, particularly in Jay Hickman's Mytho lines, which were so both in and out of character at the same that it made his part in the Princess Tutu blooper reels my favorite ones. Do the VAs still being in character only add to it for you? |

Now that I think about it, hearing Duck (not Luci Christian) was probably the reason why I found it so funny. Nothing quite like the cute, lovable Duck calling Rue a bitch in that high pitched, adorable voice. Also hearing Fakir make a pass at Mythos added to the funny. So yeah, them staying in character definitely makes it funnier.
It's not a blooper, it's just an easter egg that they (probably Matt) thought would be a fun little extra on the DVD. Also, it's the funniest thing I've seen a while, WOW. I wonder if that's on the Platinum discs and how do I access it? That's the thing about easter eggs that I hate, I don't know how to find them because I don't even know they're there. |

My take: there aren't enough outtakes provided as extras. By and large I love them, as its a way to get a good laugh, and maybe learn a little something about that VA. I recently finished up Magic User's Club and six out of the seven discs had an outtake track as an extra. After listening to them all, I felt that I'd gleaned a little something about the cast (sense of humor, way of thinking, whatever).
Most outtakes are usually good for a chuckle or two, but the really good ones will have me rolling with laughter. However...
...this is the type of outtake that I like. Those provided in the opening post, for example, work for me. As for the "outtakes" that are merely re-scripted dialog (i.e. Ikki Tousen), whoever provided them can take them back.
Beat me to it. Seriously, I wouldn't consider it to be a blooper, though it is by far one of the funniest things ever included on a disc. As you've said, it's simply Spike Spencer's feelings about the last two episodes.
I see no possible way that it couldn't. Luci Christian as Duck as John Travolta in Saturday Night Fever? Jackpot.
It's on the original Platinum volume 7 release. (I've heard it's been removed from subsequent releases, but I can't verify this.) There's a fourth, hidden audio track on episode 26, which is silent except for the rant during the closing. |

Well, according to the Chicks on Anime, it cost's extra money to buy the Japanese extras, so why don't companies just make more of their own? Obviously we love them and find them hilarious. How hard can it be to put a blooper reel on show (unless, of course, some actors are just flawless and don't make mistakes)? The inside the studio feature Princes Tutu had was really cool too, I'd love to see more of those.
I have to disagree there. I also love the Ikkitousen dialogue changes. I think I just enjoy hearing the characters saying different things.
I can verify that's it's on Volume 7 of the Platiunm Tin collection. I would assume it's on the normal thinkpak as well if it's on the tin. |

I love the Shinji rant. Just say what we're aaaaall already thinking, Spike-o.
Chris Patton has a penchant for these things, doesn't he? I'll bet he's a really funny guy. I mean, seriously, look at this lovely collection. (Whole thing's funny, but after the first couple, it's aaaaall him.) I wonder how many times they tell him to "do it for real this time, okay?" in any given session... Then again, considering his creative deadpan that really brought Sousuke Sagara to life where he had been a bit flat in FMP, I'm not one bit surprised. |

I don't usually watch dubs, but I still find the outtakes hillarious. The ones from Mythical Detective Loki Ragnarok made me laugh so much I cried. I get the same enjoyment watching all of the wacky stuff that seiyuu do with each other while recording - it's always nice to see voice actors having fun behind the microphone, and I wish we got more of it on DVDs.

I find outtakes to be hilarious. They're my favorite DVD extra, with the second being commentary, so long as it isn't the silly English VA type of commentary. Yes, it does make the VAs look unprofessional sometimes, but they are people after all, and their work is still usually good, so who cares if they goof around in the booth for a while?
I couldn't find them on youtube, but if you have the Tokko DVDs, do yourself a favor and check out the Easter eggs from the encyclopedia for this gem: "I've always felt that there was a strange force protecting me... That's why I have so much unprotected sex!" |

Two unmentioned blooper sets so far:
Midori Days: Extreme Goodness through and through. Mainly hearing the timid Midori become foulmouthed and aggressive. Capped by "December 20th, I was finally able to confess my love to Seiji.... I am no longer a virgin.". Not really a blooper reel, but the conversations with SSS on Madlax were top notch. Seem to recall the Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi had some good bloopers, mainly Chris Patton doing Michael Jackson. |

Definitely a favorite. I also like when Midori's writing in her diary something to the effect of "That f'ing bitch Ayase asked Seiji on a date." Very funny when said in Midori's cute, squeaky voice. I love outtakes. My current favorites are from Ouran High School Host Club. Chris Sabat's overuse of the word "great," Travis Willingham breaking up because a scene is just too funny for him and Caitlin Glass' attempts to be cute or her southern accent breaking in at the wrong time are all fantastic. Also, random Yoda voices and Star Wars quotes add to my enjoyment. I also get a kick when an actor knows he or she flubbed a line but just keeps going with it, usually improvising something completely off the wall and hilarious. |

Oh Lord I do love them. If anyone has even SEEN Rurouni Kenshin here is the official gag reel for season 2, and one of my personal favorite moments
and the Berserk outtakes are indeed hilarious. "Hate the player not the game! chortle chortle." |

I think you missed a few bleeped F bombs in that qoute. Great stuff, for a surprisingly funny and touching series, made better by the the out of character outtakes in my view. |
