I think Akamatsu's pushing it by comparing Del Rey to the Korean government. (Even though both Del Rey's publisher Random House and Korea have histories of slave labor.) Anyway, if it doesn't work without the fanservice, it probably sucked to begin with.

Hmm... Akamatsu complains when Del Rey takes away his adolescent breasts yet we don't hear word one from Masaki Kajishima about repainting his character's bathing suits or replacing their sake with tea.
I'd say it really points to where Akamatsu puts his emphasis and the level of creativity and depth of his work.
Man I love being this forum's leading Akamatsu basher.

The Love Hina manga gave me the same "Why the hell is this mediocre uninspired crap popular?!" reaction as Azumanga Daioh. And then I see the Maxim-wannabe covers for Love Hina and now this series, and I know.

I dispise the LH anime, but have no real problem with the LH manga. No matter what your stance is on Akamatsu or his work, it's this fact that counts: that in this day and age, we have to experience a flashback to the very beginning of manga in the US. There has been far worse material on the shelves over the last ten years and manga readers aren't shocked easily. This is purely a commercial decision as of not to offend parents and avoid the stuff ending up wrapped and/or in the adult section.
Has a creator so little to say about the foreign reproduction of his work that Akamatsu needs to accept this? Now, it's just a insignificant butt or breast, but next time, they'll cut out a religious remark or a same-sex love reference. Hell, if you are going to sell a T&A manga, at least be honest about it
Seeing how past retouch / censorship jobs have been laughably pathetic in its execution (*cough*Pokémon), we can only hope Del Rey will not leave this job to an unfortunate interim, like we have witnessed before.

A few things.
1. I find it funny how some people are reporting this. AnimeNation writes it as him being "shocked", AOD writes what happened and not his reaction, and here reports he was "slightly amused (or words to that sort)"
2. It's not like it's ruining the overall content, unless the content IS Fanservice, in which case, have the decency to look at porn. Atleast you won't be lying to yourself.
3. Nothing that Akamatsu has done has been of a significantly decent value, and I hold no hopes for this series, especially if people complain about barely/not legal ass-and-tit being covered up. Most of those people also complain that Anime is supposed to be a purely intellectual medium and get pissed off when people call them immature sex feinds who need to grow up.

Since when does nudity have to be sexual? Frankly I love the humor of it all. To quote a line from Joan of Arcadia pointed at God "It's your fault we feel shame when we're naked!"
Far as I'm concerned, somone could find a couch a turn on, so I could care less about the sexual aspect of it all. His work was altered and for any artist that would be a blow. Also, he doesn't draw full nudity to begin with, he's rather tasteful in his style. He does push it with inferences and I'm all good by that too.
This story is aparody of harry potter which is also big in japan. Fromw hat i've read, it's pretty stupid. It has no back bone like LH did, but I havn't read a full book's worth so I'll try it out when it comes out here.

Don't expect the manga to sell well, or at all. When marked with a branding like censorship, you tend to alienate the fans.

You really think he has no reason to complain? I wouldn't want anyone censoring my work for any reason. Especially when there's tons of manga with nudity out there.

Not necessarily. Plus the fact that they only censored 10 strips proves that there wasn't much nudity in the manga to begin with.
Anyway, any kind of censorship really pisses me off. Nudity doesen't have to be sexual (and there's nothing wrong with it if it is) nor does it have to mean that any manga that has it is pornographic.

I don't think it was a bitter comparison.. more along the lines of "surprise", with a dose of sarcasm. it -sounds- like he just hadn't expected that del rey might want to change his work.
if he really had any serious complaints about it, I'm sure he would've been a bit more verbal.

Just read this on the AoD forums:

Del Rey reports Negima will NOT be censored
02/27/04 02:45 PM
Hello, everyone. I'm very pleased to report the following news:
NEGIMA, Volume 1: Magister Negi, by Ken Akamatsu, will be published by Del Rey on April 27th as scheduled without any alterations to the author's original artwork and text. At the suggestion of one of our leading national book retailers, copies of NEGIMA will be shrinkwrapped with a label that states: "Contains Explicit Content, Ages 16+" on the front of the book.

Love hina seems to have far more sexuality style humor in it and is rated the same without shrink wrap. Unless younger is sexier hahah.
This may only be company standards, but eh, I'm not too sure bout this. I read a couple battle royal books and a beserk book at bortders. I didn't even take the plastic off. I won't be the one who cheats liek that. It is true that alot of this manga is not for kids, but such plastic wrap standards shuld be respected in the free manga reading populace such as myself.
I'm seeing this as wise and unwise, I'll just deal with it.

I liked Love Hina. It's my favorite manga, and not because of the fanservice. Is the nudity like in Love Hina with no nipples or does it have nipples? If it has them then it deserves shrink wrapping. But I kinda wish they'd release a cencored version AND a non cencored one so I could get it. Kinda like when they do with most explict content cds.

I wasn't planning on buying this anyways (and I'm still not), but I'm ecstatic to see that censorship has been defeated here.

Bleh, whatever comparison to the censor of Tenchi Muyo notwithstanding, you've got to understand that those various shows were being broadcasted over Cartoon Network, whose main target audience is children. I mean, as absurd as it is to think Son Timothy or Daugher Melissa will be corrupted by poorly drawn breasts or bare arse (I'm willing to make a bet that half the Son Timothy's out there have decent TGP hookups as it stands), there are some standards of censorship they must make; lest the avenging soccer mom of school children everywhere take to the ramparts and demands CN retool their programming. As long as you have lawful access to the un-tainted brands, I wouldn't even complain.
As far as Del Ray, I find a personal insult to myself as a person when I'm presented censored material because I'm an American audience. So I'm glad they backed off their decision to censor Akamatsu's fine work.

Has Del Rey released any of their manga line yet? I said this in a different thread, but if they haven't...I can understand a company who has never dealt with manga titles being a bit hesitant in how they handle their first batch of releases.
