This seems to be a 21st century equivalent to the Famicom modem. It looks good, but couldn't you just use your PC to look at all the downloaded content?

true that, but then people use their iPhones/iTouch or PSP to watch and read stuff as well, so basically the DS wants in on all that.

It's quite needed in Japan...
I see boys with their PSPs all the time around tokyo, but I see ADULTS with Nintendo DS's, and quite a lot of them (and girls, too).
I'm not sure exactly what type of programming would be best to sell, but there're plenty of people who could use this, at least in Japan.
I'm not so sure it'd be worthwhile to port it to the US, though.

Well, I would think anime will be one type of medium available for downloading, why else would ANN post this? But it's true, adults are quite frequently seen with DS consoles it's amazing.
