Song sounds nice, even if I don't think anybody is going to be able to fill the shoes of Yoko Kanno any time soon though Delta certainly tried
But I could've sworn they already did auditions for the next Macross project a while ago lol

It's a good song, but I wonder if this will be the type of music used in the new show as well. The idol music is usually pretty distinctive for each iteration of Macross, but this one seems to be very stylistically similar to Delta even if you ignore the fact that it's Freyja singing it.

Macross was always following the musical trend of the moment and trend haven't changed much from 2016 J-Pop so i can't see it being anything else, things like 7's Rock, Plus's Electro, Voiceroid, Enka, Visual Kei ( to my great regret ) ... whatever would be considered niche certainly wouldn't work well with the current audience.
The question is more idol group or solo.

I kinda always thought this Sunrise Macross would be a reboot again with Hikaru, Misa, and Minmay.

One of these days, I'm expecting SDF48 to debut.

Unless they try a K-pop style or something like that... I don't think the next group or solo it's going to sound different from delta (unless they try with guys but I assume for the auditions that they don't want to go that way, so...)
Anyway, I'm very excited to know anything about this new Macross!

This sounds more like an opening song than anything else. It could also change its style depending on who they actually have singing it for the show. It's also not unusual for the same song to be stylistically different between versions. A perfect example in another Macross series is What 'bout My Star from Macross Frontier. Sheryl's version (May'n) is totally different in style from Ranka's version (Megumi Nakajima).

Perhaps a slightly edgier take on J-Pop? Some songs from the past years come to mind. Or, if we follow anime trends, then an all-female rock band?
Nah. It's probably going to be like Walkure.
