Why does the animation and character designs look SO much worse than the first anime?

Well, if they were going to recast everybody else other than Kyosuke, at least they went with an all-star cast.

It only looks worse if you loved the original 80’s designs and animation.

Morikawa's back as Tamamo and Yoshiyama one of the MVPs of modern Pretty Cure is doing the character designs? Welp, I'm happy
Wish they got Yuri Shiratori to come back as Yukime, but I'll take what I can get (and Hiroshi and Kimura were gonna be recast anyway, since Toshiko Fujita and Kazunari Tanaka died)

The Nubé manga was published in 1993 and the Toei anime aired in 1996, so you're way off base there
I know the series has very old school design sensibilities but had to correct you there
