I don't know what's optimistic, hoping for six movies for a franchise that has historically flopped in the states, or Toei hoping for six movies after not even getting one good Dragon Ball movie.

Expecting SIX movies when success isn't guaranteed (and in this case, very unlikely) is never a good thing

Six movies? Wow, Toei is gutsy.
I mean, what would they even do with six movies... Movie One - The origin film? Or Galaxian War? Movie Two - Sanctury? Movie Three - Poseidon? Movie Four - Hades? Movie Five - Elyisum (which not even Kurumada has gotten too?) Movie 6 - Omega? |

I read that plot summary over and over again, and not only the story doesn't make any sense, they're basing most of the storyline on the shitty Netflix anime, jfc. Also, I thought we were gonna get some new visuals of the armors or something; this article is just repeating info we already knew beforehand. We already know the movie will come out in 2023.
You gotta admire the audacity these people have, though: planning another 5 movies for a movie that we don't know anything about other than obsolete info, that seems to have already butchered the source material's characters and mythology going by that horrid synopsis and the dog tag in the teaser that was released a while ago, and hasn't come out yet. |

You'd think these people would have learnt the lessons of the DCEU/Dark Universe/Harry Potter prequels by now when it comes to talking up a whole series of films

That Variety article mentions that Toei already blew sixty mil on the project.

Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure, Rurouni Kenshin, One Piece and now Saint Seiya. Is Mackenyu trying to appear in every live action Shonen Jump adaptation?

Anyone who questions Sony’s aspirations for this needs to be reminded that their slate this year hasn’t been the strongest. Hell, their CinemaCon presentations were primarily Spider Man spin-offs of C and D list villains that are for all intents and purposes, ash can projects so the rights don’t revert to Marvel Studios. They need a new franchise that won’t create a Morbius, which is also why they threw all that money at Harmony Gold and Big West to end the Macross feud, since they think that can be their Star Wars.
They are trying desperately to find their next big hit, and if Toei is sinking money, they might as well try. |

The only good thing to come from this is if Funiroll gets the anime licenses with Blu-ray releases planned similar to Robotech thanks to it's movie.
As brought up elsewhere, one of these could be the Asgard filler arc since Toei & Bandai still acknowledges it in other media like the recent video games.
It's Toei Animation who's desperate Some key parts from the Variety article that's not mentioned here.
At the time of the official announcement (not the CCXP 2016 announcement), they only acknowledged the Chinese company but Sony wasn't acknowledged until the staff & cast announcement last year. |

I think both Toei (who really want Saint Seiya to be at the same level of Dragonball internationally) and Sony (who are by their own admission searching for a new Star Wars and have earmarked Seiya and Robotech as potential candidates) are desperate, which is probably why they’re working together on this.

Sony is only acting as the distributor outside of China, Japan and the Arab world. They did not make or even fund this movie. This is all on Toei. This release was already in an uphill battle, but that actually just makes things worse. It's rare to see something produced outside of the Hollywood studio system get any major push in the Anglosphere. That's definitely going to be the case here as I doubt Sony will be dropping loads to promote something they likely can't make much off of.

Man, this six film plan reminds me of the lofty aspirations that the people behind the live-action JoJo movie had for a film franchise. The producers were talking about taking the films global, doing stuff like a Phantom Blood movie filmed in England, Stardust Crusaders adapted using an international cast, etc.
They couldn't even make it more than 1/3rd through Diamond is Unbreakable before the entire thing was quietly scrapped. |

lol I remember reading the Stardust Crusaders thing because they said they needed to adapt it to connect Josuke's lineage with Jotaro and Joseph's (also because SC is popular in Japan to the level of being iconic), and a lot of people mocking the idea since the producers would have to shoot on location to attain the international feel of the Part, and it just wouldn't happen because live-action adaptations in Japan tend to be (and look) done on the cheap most of the time. The DiU movie just proved everyone right since it looked drab, washed out, with not much of the weirdness the manga/anime had and adapting what appaears to be two movies into one. The Stands looked pretty good, though. |

Well to be fair the first two cases were a studio trying to ape on the success of the MCU……I don’t know how to explain Fantastic Beasts other than JK Rowling & Warner Bros wanting to expand on something that probably would’ve worked better as a series of novels.
With how the animated PB movie has practically become lost media for reasons we’ll never know this is rather comical. |

This movie has a good chance of being released in early 2023 at the time of year when all the commercial flops are broadcast.
mentioning that 6 movies are planned is the same thing that disney does when a movie or series fails, or you have a season more focused on a more beloved character than the protagonist (reva) since nobody is stupid enough to be honest admitting that his product is garbage (only warner's with the snyder cut) |
