Very interesting.
God help anyone making a comic book / graphic novel about Islam. Seriously. I'm all for people wanting to spread their religion by making into a comic. Sadly, some radicals in that religion are agaist any drawings of their main prophet. I bought an interesting illustrated book about Islam. The authors chose not to illustrate Muhammed and try not to offend radicals in their religion. When I hear about idiot Christians protesting Harry Potter or see Viz edit Full Metal Alchemist, I rather empathise. Then again, there was a time in the Christian Church when some leaders banned images of Saints and Jesus as being idolotry. Thankfully, the iconoclasts were defeated and icons of Saints, Christ, and other holy characters were allowed back into the church. So my heart goes out to those in Islam trying to pictorally represent their faith. Of course, radical Islam also doesn't care for the images of other religions. Let's not forget some of the largest Buddhist statues were in Afganistan. Notice that is past tense. |

Serisously, what is with this anti-Harry Potter crap? Like some kid will really start drawing upsidedown pentagrams and try to raise demons after reading this series? And Viz's edit was pointless. If people weren't freaking out over all the other religious allusions and imagery, they weren't going to blink at that one scene of Greed.
The most frightening thing about that, to me, was that it clearly illustrated what these people want to do to all of the world. In the eyes of the radicals, if you can't be converted you must be killed. And all that they think is an offense to their religion must be destroyed. The saddest thing is that there are many people who would rather ignore the obviously murderous radicals, allowing them to either radicalize or kill the moderates of Islam, in favor of worrying about the words "In God We Trust" being printed on US currency. |

Not trying to defend them here or anything, but I broke down in tears and threw a tantrum on my eleventh birthday when I didn't get a letter in the mail that said I'd been admited to Hogwarts. (I also thought that if I jumped off the edge of my bed, flapped my arms really fast, and chanted "Wingardium Leviosa!" I'd really be able to fly. Thank goodness I dumped my Harry Potter fandom in favor of anime, or I'd probably be dead by now.) |

Thousands of those loons i must add in every race, religiona and creed, radicalism is a part of human nature, take a look at the history of man for some more graphic examples. I wonder what the act of dropping a nuclear bomb on millions of civilians would be termed as, definitly not religioius radicalism but hmmmmm makes you think doesn't it.
Also this allowed people at South Park to make a mockery of him, hats off really,
You know what make my stomach feel sick when i heard about bombings on civilians in Afganistan. Ok fine deal with the radicals but the blood of even one innocent can't be shed. That act just far surpasses the act of breaking down an idol. So donot turn your back on that. |

Richard J:
From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taliban During a visit to the US in March, 2000, Syed Rahmatullah Hashemi, a senior representative...of the Taliban designated as the roving Ambassador, projected the Taliban's action not as an act of irrationality, but as an act of rage over the refusal of the UNESCO and some Western Governments to permit the Taliban to use for drought relief the funds sanctioned by them for repairing the war-damaged statues of the Buddha. vickey:
It makes me sick to know some of the bombs were in food packets... |

Oh boy, I've got a lot of explaining to do about my attempts to become an unkillable dark lord like Voldemort. Especially with all the Horcruxes I've been making lately. (Anyone who has kept up with Harry Potter should get this joke.) Although your post makes me feel old. I was solidly in my late teens when the first book came out. By the by, are there many graphic novels or manga that deal with the subject of religion or religious figures like Buddha? It seems like a subject most in the west wouldn't feel comfortable putting into this form except as a form of poltical statement. I'd be very curious to see a manga that was done as a serious examination of Christianity or Judaism since these religions are not as prevalent in Japan. (Or is that just a false meme?) A Japanese take on the subject would be very interesting to read since they would be more likely to view things with an unbiased or at the very least disinterested viewpoint. Vickeyv, GATSU: Instead of getting this thread locked and/or our posts deleted, how about we just pretend that I was just stating an opinion not trying to start a political argument? I've already inadvertenly started a thread locking flame fest by accident this week and I really don't want a repeat. |

This is pretty neat. Buddha does seem to be highly respected by those who study religion, in fact just yesterday my Eastern Religions professor recommended Buddha to the entire class if they wanted to learn more about the story of the Buddha's life.

Strictly speaking, Buddism is not a religion, but a Philosophy.
As an atheist, this type of thread is really funny.
The quote is from an article I wrote nearly 15 years ago while in college, and got me a A in English. What saddens me is the amount of vitriol being spread by apparently intelligent people, just because of religion. JBV |

I wonder what kind of university you graduated from using 5 periods as an ellipses. Also, Buddhism is a religion and spelled with an 'h'. As a theist I find atheists funny. It's hysterical how a thread about Buddha being on Anime News Network, a popular "News for Weeaboo" site invokes so many atheists. Yes and no. There are so many different sects of Buddhism. In some of these sects, Buddhism is a philosophy and way of life, where as in others, there is clearly worship of Buddha and other figures, and lack of emphasis on the "way of life" aspect. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schools_of_Buddhism |

It's not the radicals who are against it, it's most of those who follow the Islamic faith. They are strictly forbidden by the religion (it's included in their books) to depict their prophet to prevent idolism. It's a taboo comparable to Jewish people not pronouncing YHWH. |

Yes, I was just about to mention that. It's forbidden to also depict Allah, so you can expect a fair amount of uproar because of the drawings and animations of Allah featured in the magazine. |

Wow. a manga about religion (Buddhism religion that is). Sound interesting.
{Semi Off-Topic: I know a Simpsons character who is a Buddhist named Lisa. She'll probably like to read this manga. } |

Tell me, what is your plan for convincing millions of inhabitants on Earth to abandon their organized religions?
When you have, well, any given organization ever made you're likely going to have extremists. That problem stems from human nature and not necessarily from religious creeds.
I haven't read the TIME article so I don't know the context they're using, but 'Allah' isn't necessarily Islamic; it's the Arabic term for God. But if they are using the Islamic context, I would assume that the comic/movie/whatever depictions are showing the effects of God in the world rather than illustrating him outright. |

Buddha is a really great manga, I'm glad to see it's getting some recognition.
